If you're going on a cruise to Mexico, the Carribean, or Canada, then you're in luck. The rules just got relaxed for the balance of the summer. It's the legacy DL # and Birth Certificate. If you're doing a cruise elsewhere, then you'll need to apply for a passport. Go online to the goverment passport office to see where the nearest office to you is. Often, it's a library. They'll have certain days and hours of the week that you can go down there with your documents (on the website, they'll tell you which documents) and you pay the fees.

I got a passport to go on a cruise. I feel if I go outside the country a passport would be better than a drivers license or birth certificate.

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
First of all, if you are going on a cruise and it leaves from a US port, including Puerto Rico, and you will leave AND return before the end of 2007, YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT. You will need a birth certificate and a Government issued ID.

If your cruise leaves from a port outside the US and you have to fly to that port, then you do need a passport NOW. If your cruise leaves after January 1, 2008 YOU MUST HAVE A PASSPORT.

You obtain your passport from the US Passport office, but you can complete and print the application right online at this web site:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/forms/ds11/ds11_842.html#

You must then submit the application, along with the required documentation to the US Passport office, or take it to your local post office (you may as well just mail it rather than using the PO).

You can get expedited service by paying a $60 fee, but since the passport office is backed up with applications, they have eased the requirements so that all that is necessary is to show that you have applied for a passport. If you mail it, keep a copy and send it return receipt so that you have a receipt that it has been mailed in. If your departure date is months away, you can go online to this Passport office web site and check the status of your passport (you must wait 7 to 10 days before your application is in the system:

http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html

This passport office web site will answer all of your questions:

You can apply for a passport at your local post office. If your cruise leaves from and returns to the US or US territory ie. puerto rico, then you do not need a passport, just a state issued ID. If you are flying directly to a foreign country then yes, you need a passport. The rules are a little lenient for people flying directly to the Caribbean, because of the delay in processing passports, but you still need proof of application.

the passport rules are ever changing and as of right now

Jan 2008 is when they are required

this is for land and sea travel

Joe
In order to get a passport, all you need to do is go to your local postoffice. They usually have people to do it and can get it to you within 5-10 weeks. For a cruise, you might need one, i believe you do.
