The largest cruise ships are Royal's Freedom and Liberty of the Seas (they are the same size). Royal will also be releasing a larger class ship(s) in the next couple of years - they are calling this class Genesis (no ship names as of yet.)

I think you mean largest cruise ship. The largest cruise line is Carnival, but it does not have the largest ship.

Currently the largest cruise ship is the Freedom class owned by Royal Caribbean. The Freedom Class consists of the Freedom of the Seas, the Liberty of the Seas and in 2008 will include the Independence of the Seas. These ships are about 158,300 gross registered tons (GRT). GRT is a space rating, not a weight rating. One GRT is 100 cubic feet.

In 2009 the biggest cruise ship will be Royal Caribbean's Genesis or Project Genesis ship. This ship is expected to be around 220,000 GRT.

Going back to 1996, Carnival introduced the Carnival Destiny. At 101,000 GRT it was the first cruise ship to exceed 100,000 GRT and was at the time the largest cruise ship.

In 1998 Princess introduced the Grand Princess. At 109,000 GRT it was then the largest cruise ship.

In 1999 Royal Caribbean introduced the Voyager of the Seas. at 138,500 GRT it was then the largest cruise ship.

In 2004 Cunard (which is owned by Carnival) introduced the Queen Mary 2 (QM2). At 150,000 GRT it was then the largest passenger ship. The QM2 is an ocean liner and thus remains the largest ocean liner.

It should be noted that the QM2 is longer and wider than the Freedom of the Seas, though the Freedom of the Seas has more interior room (which is what the is used to determine GRT). However, the Genesis ship will be longer than the QM2 (I don't know if it will be wider).

There is some debate, this depends if you go by gross tonnage or displacement tonnage.
