Drinking on cruise lines...carnival specifically?

so i'm thinking of going on a cruise, however i am only 20 so in the u.s i can't drink. the ship would be going from florida to mexico and then back again. i know that i could drink in mexico as i did so before when i was only 17 with my family and the drinking age is 18. but when i was on the ship previously...i am unsure if there was any i.d-ing going on seeing as there were so many people drinking anyhow. but i know they slide your cruise card to purchase items...are they able to tell by your card that you are underage and prohibit you from purchasing alcohol? are there any laws that allow younger people to drink once on open waters...or whatever it is when you are on the ocean and not in us territory? i saw plenty of people even younger than me drinking the last time i was on the ship but it may have been their parents doing...so i'm not sure...any ideas? also can you bring your own alcohol on the ship or purchase it in mexico and bring it back on the ship while underage in the us

You can't bring your own to drink on the ship unless you are very sneaky. When getting back on the ship at port they will send your bags though x-rays just like at the airport. They really want you to buy their drinks so they are very strict about the policy of not letting you bring your own bottlesI don't think that you will have a problem getting a drink though. You will be able to drink in Mexico and I think the only place you might have a problem would be on the ship if you try to buy drinks directly.

They know your age when you book. Here is Carnival's & RC's policy on drinking...from their website. You need a cruise buddy 21 or older to buy your drinks. I doubt anyone would challenge you.

Carnival

Are there any age restrictions on board?

Drinking alcoholic beverages:

Guest must be 21 years of age or older to be served alcohol on board. Proper I.D. with birth date is required.

Casino:

Guest must be 18 years of age or older to play the tables and the slot machines.

Guests under 18 years of age are not permitted in the casino.

ALCOHOL POLICY
Effective as of all sailings commencing on or after July 28, 2006, the minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on all Royal Caribbean International ships is 21.

However, on cruises departing from European and South American countries, where the legal drinking age is typically lower than 21, a parent who is sailing with his or her son(s) and/or daughter(s) who is between the ages of 18 to 20, may sign a waiver allowing the 18 to 20 year old to consume alcoholic beverages.

The 18- to 20 year-old must agree to comply with Royal Caribbean's policies, including among other things, agreeing to not provide alcoholic beverages to any other person, regardless of age. Restrictions apply, and this policy is subject to change without notice.

Guests are not allowed to bring alcoholic beverages onboard for consumption or any other use. Alcoholic beverages that are purchased in ports of call or from onboard shops will be stored by the ship and delivered to guest staterooms on the last day of the sailing. Security may inspect containers (water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, luggage etc.) and will dispose of containers holding alcohol. Royal Caribbean's Guest Conduct Policy may be enforced, up to and including disembarkation, if a guest violates any alcohol policy. Guests under the age of 21 will not have alcohol returned to them.

Guests who violate any alcohol policies, (over consume, provide alcohol to people under age 21, demonstrate irresponsible behavior, or attempt to conceal alcoholic items at security and or luggage check points or any other time), may be disembarked or not allowed to board, at their own expense, in accordance with our Guest Conduct Policy.

All guests must comply with TSA guidelines for transporting liquids.

Royal Caribbean reserves the right to revoke or otherwise restrict drinking privileges of any guest, regardless of age.

GAMBLING POLICY
Guests eighteen (18) years of age and older are welcome to play in our casinos (for all Alaska sailings, guests must be 21 years of age in order to play in our casinos).

When you are issued a card, I believe that they verify your age. After all, the cruise line has all of your personal information. It is a corporate cruise line and will try to avoid law suits.

I was just on a carnival cruise last week and they allowed on bottle of wine or champagne for each person over 21. They do not sell alcohol to people under 21 and they do not allow you to bring alcohol back on the ship. The cards they issued did not differ between child and adult but they swipe it on the computer if you look under 21 and they can tell.
