Dumb question about calling back home from cruise ship? |
I am going on a cruise next month (Carnival Glory), and I was wondering if you could buy a calling card and use it to call home? Or I have my cell phone service (Verizon Wireless) which costs $1.99 a min for international roaming while out to set, Using the ship phones are more expensive I have heard (when calling home from room phone). Thanks

I just got back from my carnival cruise. ( It was ah-mazing) but I never had a signal, even if i wanted to call back home i couldn't. The ship phones are over priced so what i did was on port day, using the internet was half-price, so instead of calling my family, i emailed them tons of pics. |

First of all you do not want to make calls from and through the ship's system. That costs BIG bucks. Your best options for calling home are to make arrangement with your phone service to get roaming in the port cities you will be in. OR, you can buy phone cards and use them with your cell or find one of the local phones in the port city and make a phone card charged call. Nearly every pier has a bank of phones on or near it that he ship's personnel always used.
My wife always arranges for out of the country phone service and has used her call phone pretty much all over the world. |

Cell phone connect through cell phone towers. You don't find many of those while out at sea. When you are close to the US shore you will be able to connect. Close to any other countries shore and it's international roaming. |

I have Verizon and they don't work while at sea at ALL. You would have to wait until you are at port to use it. The calls from your stateroom are outrageous, like 8 bucks a minute, because the call connects through satellites. You can't use a calling card from your room because they don't allow it, you would still have to pay for the connection to the satellite. Sorry |
