I have been on about 20 cruises so I'll tell you what I know.

The requirement for having a passport for a cruise has been delayed until next year, 2009. Right now all you need to go on a cruise is proof of ID and citizenship. That means a photo ID and a birth certificate is acceptable, in lieu of a passport.

When you get to the cruise port to check in the cruise line will examine your documentation, be it ID and birth certificate or passport, and return it to you at the check-in desk. You will not need the passport or birth certificate to get off and on the ship in St Thomas or any other Caribbean port. After verifying your identify and citizenship the cruise line will issue you a cruise card which will serve as your room key, charge card for anything you buy on the ship AND your pass to get off and on the ship. When you get off the ship the one thing that you will always need is the cruise card. Its a good idea to take also your photo ID, i.e., driver license. But most places all they want to see for you to get back on the ship is your cruise card, never your passport (except some places in Europe).

what's they said

Land/Sea Travel

Beginning January 31, 2008, the United States will end the practice of accepting oral declarations of citizenship at the border.

* U.S. citizens ages 19 and older must present documentation that proves both identity and citizenship. Identification documents must include a photo, name and date of birth. View the complete list of acceptable documents at CBP.gov.
* Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

It is not required to have a passport to go to St. Thomas, but it is required to have a passport to board the carnival valor, since you will be going outside of U.S. property. If you are flying in and out of the country you will need a passport as well. (This is if you are a U.S. citizen) Have a great cruise.

I have been on 3 soon to be 4 cruises. They all went out of the country. I am 13 and our 4th cruise is over my bday. We went on our first cruise when I was 10 and my dad, brother and I didn't have passports, so we just used our birth certificates, but after that, we got passports because it is so much easier and you don't have to worry about losing you birth certificate. I would reccomend taking a passport, and make a copy of it, just in case.

I've been to St. Thomas on a cruise twice. This was before I had my passport. Do your research people. St. Thomas is a UNITED STATES Virgin Island.
