Carnival is a good cruise line, especially for a first cruise. It's quality is generally better than Royal, although both lines have their fans and detractors.

Any cruise line is going to have families, especially if you travel during vacation times. The end of December is the peak time for cruises, especially for families. Earlier in December will be quieter, in terms of number of kids, and will also be cheaper.

You can read reliable, up-to-date info from experienced cruisers at CruiseCritic.com. Click on "Boards" and then choose your topic. Or click on "Reviews" and see what the pros and guests have to say - "Member Reviews" will be especially helpful. You may also want to check "Cruise Styles", where the different types of cruises are described.

Have a great time on your cruise.

Actually ALL cruise lines have kids, so carnival is NO different. In fact as a travel professional, I sell carnival quite a bit to couples. As it is considered the "fun ship"..They have lots of childrens programs on board and you very rarely see the kids running around as they are supervised and kept busy all the time... Dont worry, YOU WILL enjoy yourself...

Carnival is for all ages, but they do get a lot of families. If your cruise is during the winter holiday like End of December, then yes you will get lots of kids. If not, then it will be a nice mix. Royal Caribbean is a step up from Carnival along with Princess and celebrity. With that said, everyone I know that has been on Carnival, have really enjoyed themselves, from the very young to the elderly.

if you are cruising with a UK based company its worth knowing that p&o have two cruise ships that are child free ARCADIA is the one that we have been on three times no children allowed and the cruise was superb every time.

GAMECOCKS!
You typically hear Royal recommended from older people. I went on 4 Carnival Cruises during College - 2 with a boyfriend and 2 with groups of friends and was completely happy! All cruise ships have activities to appeal to all groups of people. I think you will be very happy! The last carnival cruise I was on we met some guys at one of the ports who were traveling on royal & told us they were really bored on their ship. It's just a matter of who you are with & what you make of it. Don't let other's worry you - you will have a wonderful time. Cruises are very romantic no matter what cruise line you travel on!

I in no way intend to scare you even more than you already are. But the cold truth is carnival is really a budget cruise line, you get what you pay for. I personaly would never sail with them again. But i have met many happy cruisers who have sailed with them. but royal is the better overall cruise line. Yes carnival is a more family oriented line but they still do attract their share of couples. If you want more info on my less than great carnival cruise than email me and maybe i can help. Overall carnival is a good line, they dont appeal to me, but thats just me. Its good to atleast try all the cruise lines you can. I think you will have a great time. for any info and member reviews you can log onto www.cruisecritic.com and check things out. Carnival is however great for first timers like yourselves
