SKJOBAKER

Has anybody been on an Island escape cruise.?

We are due to go on it in May. We have been looking at the off shore excursions and just wondered how easy it is to do your own thing . (We do have a 4 and 8 year old). Its just the organised trips are SO expensive. We will be doing the med spirit.
Thanks

We got fed up with overpriced and poorly organised shore trips several years ago.

We now organise our own, from Hawaii to Sicily. Start with the local tourist office most are very helpful. Initially you need to spend a lot of time researching on the net, but it gets much easier the more you do.

For example we went up the top of Mount Vesuvius shortly after it had finished erupting with a local guide - now that was really worthwhile!

We also went to Herculenium, whereas most trips only go Pompeii.

Hiring your own guide is not expensive compared to 2 x shore excursions and you will get a much better experience!

I have to admit I got bored out of my mind on the boat after a while - other than that, first response was on the head - know what you want to do at each stop before you depart - or at least a suggestion. Keep in mind a lot of places are not buggy friendly.

ocean.denis
Of course you can.
I'm checking out a Island Escape "Spirit" coffee mug here to check if it does Naples, but doesn't say, but I would not go out in Naples with shore-ex or not, not now with all the garbage laying around the streets, on the other places you certanly can.
The excursions are very expensive and not very good.
Also you will find the food disgusting.
good luck

Ocean.denis is correct.
Don't go out by yourself in Naples.
Dangerous.
Food is horrible.
Some officers too.
There was a hotel manager that was so rude, tall guy from Barbados or something.
And capitan Dobbs has no education at all.
He has no stands to command an emmergency boat.

We did the med with P&O last summer and will be doing Eastern med with same this year. We only took two excursions and that was to Rome and Florence because they are about and hour from ship. All other ports of call we did our own thing. Do a bit of research on where you are going beforehand to see what interests you in each stop.
