your best bet is to look up cruises on line you can get last minute cruises around half the price. I have offers all the time since I linked up with the offers. also there are offers on teletext which are great, you need to be careful some of the companies I have been told don't give as good as they say. there is one that owns a TV company and 2 cruise ships which tours the Nile regular.
But beside sea cruses there are big river cruise that pass Vienna and stop 2 nights, regular from Germany to Slovakia, you stop at the major tourist spots on the Danube or the Rhine. They are super value and you are not on the high seas so not near as much danger of problems and no pirates which can be a problem on some cruises at the moment. but not the Med .as yet if you like and are serious about a cruise I can send details of either. the site of special offers and one which is here and Germany a supermarket which does super holidays and cruises but would need your E-mail to send the links

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
I have cruised to the Mediterranean two times and both cruises were great. I have also cruised pretty much all of the routes in the Caribbean. The decision on which you should cruise depends upon the type cruise experience you want to have. If you are looking for activities involving the water like beach time, swimming, snorkel, scuba, or sunning on a beach and enjoying a beach party, then the Caribbean is the place. If you want to enjoy a wealth of historical sites like the Vatican City and Colosseum in Rome and/or the Acropolis in Athens, then the Mediterranean is the place. Many of the cruise lines that do Caribbean cruises also do Mediterranean cruises.

The reputable cruise lines that I think you should consider are Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, and maybe Norwegian. My recommendation would be to use either of the first 3 above with Royal Caribbean being MY first preference.

There are a variety of cruise itineraries in both locations and so you have to pay close attention to where each ship is going. My personal preference for the Mediterranean is Royal Caribbean's Brilliance of the Seas (http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/cruiseDetails/itineraryAndPricing.do;jsessionid=0000QEyYd35U3LLwlbsKkbVDzhH:12hdhu6tq?packageCode=BR12M028&date=ANY&selectedCurrencyCode=&promoType=&hasSenior=&hasMilitary=&state= ) or their Voyager of the Seas ( http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/cruiseDetails/itineraryAndPricing.do;jsessionid=0000QEyYd35U3LLwlbsKkbVDzhH:12hdhu6tq?packageCode=VY07M021&sailDate=1081122&date=ANY&selectedCurrencyCode=&promoType=&hasSenior=&hasMilitary=&state= ).

Royal Caribbean also has this same class of ships sailing in the Caribbean.

Yes you can sometimes book a cruise a month in advance; there may be cabins left and deals on the ships. But you generally get the best price by booking about 12 months or more in advance.

I have been on both and enjoyed both. They are quite different, of course. I look at the Caribbean cruises as nice shopping trips with great transportation, and a chance to enjoy a pool and nice weather and good food I don't have to cook. A Mediterranean cruise is more of a voyage to very interesting places.

As to booking, do that as early as possible to get the best rates, and don't forget to buy insurance! (I just had to cancel a cruise due to my sister's/traveling companion's unanticipated surgery, and we will get back all but our insurance premium, which is a whole lot better than losing roughly $3000!)

As to which cruise line or ship, there is a very wide variety, and it would be a very good idea to meet with a travel agent who books a lot of cruises. A good travel agent doesn't cost you a dime, and can help get you on a ship that best meets your resources and expectations.

I have been on both the Mediterranean and 2 times to the caribbean. The mediterranean was much more exciting of a cruise. So much history to see. There is no place like Venice and greece is just a jaw dropper. You can go on a last minute cruise. Just go to vacations to go and click on the 90 day ticker. Of course you know that your cabin choices are limited. Anyways, where ever you do cruise to, either one would be great. The mediterranean would be more expensive.

I went to the med last year and it was just brilliant. It was 12 days and we stopped at ten places. we tripped out to Pompei [fab] Mount Versuvius...loads of interesting places.
I have also been to the caribbean and that is as brilliant though not as cultural.
Both are superb.
