My wife and I went on the Maiden voyage Jan 2004 - Southampton to Fort Lauderdale.
Some correct facts.
There are many balcony rooms available and you do not have to travel 'first class' to have a balcony. The cheaper balcony rooms are located on the lower decks and are cut into the hull.
The more expensive suites are located on the upper decks and have traditional balconies and are larger than those on the lower decks.
There are three 'classes' (although they prefer to call it 'categories'). Britannia being the lowest, then Princess Grill and then Queens Grill.
For each of these categories there is a seperate restaurant (with the corresponding name).
Queens Grill have their own lounge and sun deck.
The specified dining room, lounge and reserved sun deck are the only areas which are reserved for passengers in that category.
Britannia is two seating (early or late), Princess and Queens Grill are single seating (turn up when you like).
The ship is massive and you'll soon learn to make sure that when you leave your cabin, you'll not want to forget something and have to make a long journey back to collect it!!!!
The decor attempts to be 'traditional', but at times it fails to convince. Eg. Plastic marble pillars.
Service is 'Cunard style' - white gloves etc.
Promenade deck is great as is the raked stern with pools/hot tubs - you really feel you're on an ocean liner as opposed to a floating brick.
Some great watering holes - eg. Golden Lion pub, Commodore Club lounge overlooking the bow.
All in all expect a first class voyage (as opposed to cruise).
Expect traditional service in an attempt to hark back to the olden days of ocean liners.
Crew are mostly british/european except for deck hands/engine room etc who tend to be Filipino. |

I haven't but my aunt has. She flew to Europe and did a cruise over there for 12 days I believe. She raved about the ship. They were kind enough to wait for her (and others on her plane) - they were seriously delayed at 2 airports - she was very thankful!
One thing I have heard (I am not sure if it is true) is that the Queen Mary 2's guest list by room is sort of like the Titanic in that the upper class members (higher paying cruise members) are separated from other members of the ship. This seems absurd to me but you may want to check it out for your own peace of mind.
Have a great trip: ) |

Queen Mary 2 is a great ship. food, service, reviews, entertainemtn...etc...
Alittle back ground of the Cunard line will help as well....
Cunard is owned by Carnival, it is a british style ship. They have different levels of "class" just like the Titanic.
If you have an inside room, you can only eat on certain levels of the ship, certain restaurants and are forbidden in certain areas without a pass.
If you have on outside room, you have alittle more options...
Balcony-suites...are high class, they have access to the entire ship, although you probably wont see them much if you have any thing other than a suite or balcony, they will stay in their own area. If you run into them somewhere, you will be able to notice them.
The ship itself is phenominal, the stops, everything about the ship is luxury and amazing, The "class" separation is one thing I warn my clients about. |
