It wasn't until I was washing my hands that I realized I was in the women's bathroom, when a lady came out of a stall.

This thing happens all the time... since you're not in your own house, and you're in a strange environment, it's easy to get locations confused. At night, the signs are not well lit.

If you have Asian people on the ship who can't read English, they go into the opposite bathrooms all the time.

Remember, in some countries, like Sweden, men and women might share a bathroom. The women walk past the men at the urinals and go to stalls. It's really not such a big deal. It seems to embarrass Americans a lot more than other people, like the Europeans. Keep in mind that in Europe, women go topless at the beach. As Americans we are taught to feel some sort of shame for accidentally going into the wrong facility.. but by most human standards, it's no big deal.

Actually, yes, I did! I was stone cold sober and chattering away with my sister, and pushed the wrong door open just in time to see a gentleman in a tuxedo drop his trousers at the gentleman's facility. I beat a very hasty retreat, and hoped that he didn't see who I was! It was on a westbound crossing on the QE2 at the restrooms between the Golden Lion Pub and the Ocean Bar and Mauretania Dining Room. (A friend of mine flying her airplane to the west coast for an air race made a stop in Wyoming, made a mad dash to the restroom, flung open the door, ran into a stall, and was sitting there taking care of business when she heard several men walk in! We waited and waited and waited, not knowing what happened, and not seeing her in the ladies room -- it was a while before she was fairly sure the coast was clear to leave!)
