I have been on 20 cruises and yes you will meet new people at dinner, in the show room, on tours you take, around the pool and all over the ship. The things that you can do on ship will vary by the cruise line and the ship. It will also vary by your age since some things are for adults only.
Many of the newer ships of all of the cruise lines have more activities than there are on the older ships. Older ships would in general be those launched before about 2000. The types and number of activities also varies by cruise line with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line having by far THE most activities. Things that may be available depending upon the ship:
- use the pools, hot tubs and water slides
use the full service gymnasium with all types of free weights and exercise machines
use the full service spa where you can get hair and nails done and massages and wraps.
- use the sauna and/or steam rooms
- use the mini-golf course and/or a golf driving range or golf simulator
- use the roller blade track and/or an ice skating rink. If there is an ice rink there will be an ice show like the ice capades
- use the rock climbing wall.
- use the full sized basketball/volleyball/tennis court
- play table tennis
-use the over sized Chess/Checker sets and shuffle board
- use the walking/ jogging track
- play in the video arcade
-use the kids only area, some with a pool and/or water slide
- use the teens only area, some including a teen disco
-use the pool tables (RC ships)
- go to the show room where there will be a show every evening, one for each dinner seating
- use the game room with games and cards provided
- use the internet cafe
- use the library with books provided or bring your own
- go to the disco that is open every night starting about 11:00 PM and lasting until the last person leaves.
- go to the piano bar and a sports bar; all ships will have lounges and cocktails bars at various places on ship
- some ships have a small movie theater and you can also watch movies (most for free) in your cabin. Princess has movies under the stars on some ships.
- order the free 24/7 room service
- go to the casino for gambling if you are old enough
- enjoy a huge variety of food and plenty of it, seconds and thirds are OK too.
- sit on a deck or your cabin's balcony and watch the ocean go by.
- go to art auctions
- go to lectures and learning seminars on some ships
- go to the Karaoke bar
- go to the wine tasting if you are old enough
- shop for souvenirs
There may even be a few others things that I have not listed. Some are for adults only and some are for kids only; all ships have kids programs. Remember that not all ships have all of these things. Some may have only a few.
I always have great experiences on cruises and that's why I keep doing more of them. |

I know exactly how you feel. The closer you get to your cruise date, the more excited you become. I have been on 8 cruises and I can't wait for my next cruise. It will be in October. You will meet tons of people and many your own age. Let all or shyness disappear because you will most likely never see these people again unless you want to. So, let it all hang out. Cruising is a time to relax and have fun. From the minute you get in line to get on the ship, till the very end of your cruise is great. Where are you going? Oh, if you want to talk to other cruiser on your ship beforehand, go to cruise critic, sign up(it's free) then go to boards, then to your cruise company then to the date of your cruise. There you will find bunches of people just like you going on your cruise. |

It depends where you go and what type of cruise it is (the main theme)shipboard life is usually all you can eat etc,the best way is to take part in everything you can,it is all good fun and a learning curve. If you can afford it,go on all the shore trips. If people leave library books on the loungers ,take them back to the library,i always did that,if they leave towels on them while they go for dinner/lunch,throw the towels into the laundry bins supplied.Keep your eyes and ears open for all the me first brigade tricks, like husband seeing the cabin/luggage is sorted while the wife gets as many library books as she can carry. You will see the depths of human greed first hand, but you will have a hell of a good time.Remember no passenger owns anything aboard,it is there for everyones use.ENJOY. |

Lucky you, you'll love it! We've been on two cruises and have already booked our third.
Depending on what ship/cruise line you're going on, you may have to take several types of clothes (formal, informal, beachwear etc.). You'll undoubtedly meet new people; we met people by the pool and at dinner. Some cruise lines have pre-booked tables for dinner which means that you may be on a table with other people each evening. That's a good way of meeting people.
There are usually several types of entertainment going on during the day and in the evening, plus at least one "Quiet bar" where you can sit with a cocktail and perhaps listen to some music.
Cruises really cater for a great holiday for most people, whatever you want from your holiday. But it does all depend on your Cruise Line.
I like to order a brochure from the cruise line and then I can sit and read through it all before I go - gives you information on your particular ship but also gives you something to look forward to!
For info, we've been on Ocean Village, Ocean Village 2, and have booked our next one with Royal Caribbean.
Enjoy! |

I can still remember the feeling when I stepped aboard my first cruise. It was Holland America's Volendam. We were going to Alaska. I was eight and so excited. The only downer was that I got really seasick. So, four years later, this year, I went to the Baltic on the Rotterdam and I was very hesitant about the wave and movement of the boat this time. I had been taking gravol every night but from Helsinki to Stockholm we got caught in a storm with 18 foot waves. But, since I had been taking gravol, I just felt a bit sick. I did get kicked out of the teen program because I wasn't turning 13 until 1 week after but I did meet a lot of the crew and I did meet someone who was a year younger than me. I really think cruising is the only way to travel. It's like you become part of a family. |

I love cruising, and one of the best parts is meeting new people. Like any vacation, it is what you make of it, so keep stay open-minded and willing to try new experiences. You sound like a friendly person so I think you'll have no problems making new friends, and who knows, new cruising buddies. What cruise are you going on? |
|

Yes, about 15 - on little ships, medium ships (never on a huge ship), brand new ships, elderly ships that have since been scrapped.... all good in their own ways, and bad in very few. Generally the crew do everything possible to make you welcome and make sure you have a good time. They're new people to you - talk to them and you'll learn about the countries they come from. If tips are not included in your cruise fare, don't forget to take money for them - it means the wonderful staff are poorly paid!
The main thing is, just enjoy yourself. |

I have been on one cruise. It was a British Caribbean Christmas. I went with my partner, who hated every minute on the ship and thus made my evenings pretty awful too. Day time in port were brilliant. I booked up for excursions which I would never have done otherwise e.g horse riding, zip lining. Even though I had been to a few islands before, I never appreciated how different each one was from the other until you visit them in quick succession. Food on board was pretty good. Plenty of it. It was mostly geared to traditional British tastes, which I found a bit boring after a while and there was little opportunity to eat outside at night, which is something I love to do on holidays. I did enjoy the dressing up and the fact that everyone made an effort to look smart. Entertainment was a bit rubbish though and there weren't enough sunbeds in the sun on sea days. I would go on a cruise again but I would take someone with a more positive attitude. I think cruising is especially suited to families. |

Hi! I've been on 4 cruises and I'm only 14! There's so much to do that I don't think I can list them all; but what other people have said sounds right. You can go to single nights in some of the bars to meet people and you can also meet people at one of the many activities they have on board.
One thing I love to do is SHOPPING! It's usually duty free when not in port so you can get some real bargins!
Hope this helps and that you have a excellent cruise! |
