How could this be a scam? |
The other day I signed up to receive a free wedding planning catalog so I could get tips for my reception this summer. I had to give my name, address, email, and phone number, but no credit card number so I continued to sign up. After I submitted the information, the following page said I would receive my free catalog soon and that I had automatically been entered to win a free honeymoon. I hardly entertained the possibility at all and quickly forgot about it. This was just a couple of days ago. Today I got phone call, NOT a recording, from a woman informing me that I had won a two-night, three-day cruise to the Bahamas. She proceeded to give me a code to write down and informed me that the only catch would be that me and my husband would have to go to a 90 minute seminar at a local hotel. We simply have to give the hotel our code, stay for the entire seminar without being tricked into buying any stupid things, and we leave with our packet that says we have two years to use our trip. Additional Details This sounds innocent enough, I just want to know if anyone has ever experienced this before and if so, what are some precautions to make, or it's just a scam. We aren't well off at all and we have no credit cards, so there's no way we could be tricked into buying crap at the seminar. I really want educated answers only, from people who have experienced this before. |

The "seminar" is probably a high pressure sales presentation about COOKWARE or TIMESHARES they want you to buy or insist that you buy in order to get the "free" honeymoon.

My advice is "don't bother -- pay for your own real honeymoon where the two of you want to be." |

My parents go to seminars like that all the time to get free weekend stays at nice beach resorts. They never buy anything while they're at the seminar but still get the weekend getaway.
I think they pick you based on credit history. |

Yes it IS a scam. My professional advice is to stay away from that meeting, don't agree to do it. They want to sell you a time share and they use high-pressure sales technics, and the cruise they want to give away has many strings attached and will end up being more expensive than you might originally think. It's very difficult to just go and listen to a 90 minute presentation and simply leave with a cruise voucher and not buy anything else. If it sounds too good to be true it is. I own a cruise-only travel business and have been selling cruises for 25 years. There are some good deals out there, but it's helpful to talk with a professional cruise-expert rather than a travel agent. |

Well, its not really a scam. They are selling something like timeshares. They sell vacations packages. they will tell you that the package for the next 10 years is $15,000, then $400 a year, then $99 each time you make a reservation. They give you a list of places you can go. However, once you make the purchase, the flight times can't be guaranteed, nor can the hotel.
You can do a lot of travel for $15,000, so I would recommend forgetting about it. |

It's more than likely a time share deal. They will try to sell you a time share. They are very high pressure and they do their own financing and will finance everyone. (at 18-29%) They are legitimate and will give you the cruise even if you do not purchase the time share. But if you can't handle the pressure sales tactic then I advise you to stay away. |

I think you'll find out, when you go to the so called seminar, that you did not win it, just yet. And that there will be other things you have to do to actualy win it.
Good luck though.
I agree with the guy up, it's a time share thing. |

Its a way to get you to buy a timesare or similair. Its a scam family friend did the same thing. They wont give it poeple that are single. They think that a married couple or soon to be are the best target for that stuff. |

I won a trip like this once, same thing 2 nights 3 days, the scam part is, that that's really not enough time to really do anything but ride to the Bahamas and back. What she is going to do is offer you an extend stay which you will have to pay for, so that your trip will end up being about a week long. The deal is actually pretty reasonable, if you can afford to take it, another catch is that you have to pay a fee to go into another country, I think it's about 80$, and you have to get to Florida yourself in order to leave on the boat. Ok if you live close by, but not if you don't.
Also you don't have to take the extended deal, but the trip my be more of a hassle to take if you have to find a way down there. |

These are probably one of those timeshare seminars that last all day and when it's done they talk to you one on one and they are very, VERY persistent trying to convince you to buy something. If you can endure that and still be strong and not buy anything then do it. You will get the trip. But remember, they will keep going and going trying to make a sale. To me it's not worth it...I wouldn't be able to stand it! |

I wouldn't do it!!
Now and days mostly everything is a scam!
It really sounds like a timeshare deal.
Be careful! You wouldn't want to end up broke or have an identity theft over a magazine!
Just buy a magazine at CVS for like 5.00 its cheap and you don't have to worry about people calling you for a fake trip!
Good Luck on you decision! |
