How does security work on cruise ships?

I can only guess that most of a cruise ship's security is 'plain-clothes' so as not to alarm the tourists or worry them, and that the ship's crew has a stash of weapons under lock & key.

First, how are they going to get on the ship? Once in port, cruise companies have a ton of security surrounded the ship at all times. That includes if the cruise ship is surrounded by water and passengers are tendered in. Trust me, they certainly do have weapons. Just because you didn't see any, doesn't mean they don't have weapons. Besides, the big cruise companies like Princess, do not even go to places like Somalia. Even when a ship is in Mexico, they not only tell the passengers to not go to certain places, they have security all over. Why just getting back on a ship, you have to show your cruise card at the dock, and then again that card is scanned as soon as you get on the ship. I feel much safer on a cruise ship, then on a airplane, or in a car. But then, I have only gone on 9 cruises and none of them were where pirates hang out except the Caribbean.

Well, i went on one ship, about a year ago.. and this happened....

A dumb teenager, tried to bring weed back from Jamaica. They wanted ot take him off the ship, but i guess the gurdians worked something out. He wasnt aloud to leave his room, and a security gaurd manned his door, i even walked by, and there was a guard there.

But as for other security, theres not alot.

Like Time traveler said, how do they do it? They can't climb on the ship in open waters. A cruise ship could outrace most things but even if it didn't, the lowest deck is a long long way off the water. No speedboat would be able to climb up.

Then of course, how many pirates would it take to hold 3000 people hostage? I mean seriously--where are you going to keep them? You'd need at least 500 pirates to even stand a chance. Otherwise the passengers could just overwhelm them, gun or no gun.

You must have been oblivious to the security though. Each time you entered the ship there were security guards manning the plank. You had to show your card to get past customs, then scan the card to get onboard. There are cameras everywhere and on my last cruise, two teens got into a loud fist fight. Security was there within a minute--way faster than if anyone had called it in. The casino is filled with security guards.

It's impossible for a cruise ship to not have "weapons". There have thousands of steak knives, hundreds of huge knives in the kitchen, boiling oil and metal pots and pans, fire extinguishers every few feet, and more empty vodka bottles than you can imagine that could become broken bottles. I can almost promise you on every ship there is at least 2 guys who have been in the military and someone has a syringe for diabetes (which can be used to kill someone if you know how). Really I don't even know that 500 pirates could control a mob.

Then of course you can't control them from lowering the life boats and people escaping.

Then of course there is the actual military--as you mentioned they would call the coast guard or Navy to surround the ship.

The pirates want to take hostages and ransom them but ideally you want to take cargo hostage. People will pay to have their ship returned with the cargo. It would be impossible to ransom all the passengers on a cruise ship. Just trying to call the family for all the passengers...even if you assume 2 per family that's still over 1000 phone calls just for passengers. At super short 20 minutes a call, that's 33 solid hours of being on the phone.

Lastly there aren't many cruises to Somalia's coast.
