How likely is it carnival will choose a new destination if they cancel the original?

I'm supposed to be going on a cruise to key west and cozumel in two days, but carnival recently announced all stops to mexico have been cancelled due to the swine flu. The announcement said they would be working on a new itinerary and details would be provided by tomorrow evening. My question is that is it likely we will be rerouted to another port, such as bahamas or something, or is it more likely that we will "cruise to no where" and stay at sea? Has anyone experienced a change in destinations such as this with carnival cruise lines?

Sometimes they can substitute ports, other times it is just an extra "fun day at sea". It depends upon the availability in other ports and the amount of notice they ships have.

They will either choose a new destination or they will keep you in port longer at whatever city you are visiting first. They will probably also offer you some sort of compensation, especially if you demand it, for your troubles and dissappointment.

i was on a cruise and they were supposed to cruise the east side of the Caribbean. due to a storm that they found out about while we were on the ship, they completely changed the itinerary to the west side in the matter of about a day. They'll take you to a different port - they won't cruise to nowhere

In the link that Barkley gave you, click View Latest Updates at the bottom of the page. They describe the changes due to the swine flu outbreak in Mexico. But, note that they also say something like "If the itinerary changes are not to your liking, Carnival will allow you to change your cruise to a different date".

So, if you really wanted to go to Cozumel, you could reschedule your cruise to a later date, when they would probably allow stops in Mexico.

Carnival is still working on the changes but you can see the latest here: http://www.carnival.com/cms/fun/cruise_control/itinerary_updates.aspx
