I would not plan on being anywhere near Galveston for the next 5 days at the least. The hurricane Ike is projected to hit Galveston on Saturday morning and head north up to Houston and further. But the prediction is that Galveston Island will be covered with water so it will be near impossible to even get there until the water subsides, let alone get to a cruise ship.
BUT ...... I think the cruise line is being really stupid with this posted on its web site about the cruises leaving from there:
"Galveston Departures – September 11 and September 14
The Carnival Ecstasy will sail as scheduled from Galveston on Thursday, September 11, 2008. The ship will visit Veracruz (Sat.).
We are also expecting the Carnival Conquest to sail as scheduled on Sunday, September 14.
We want to thank all of our guests for sailing with us. We are dedicated to providing you with a fun and memorable cruise vacation."
From this its clear to everyone, including Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, that the cruise line only cares about making money and not passenger safety. And, it show a lack of common sense by the cruise line in NOT posting more definitive information on its web site. |

Ummm hello....I'm that person Steve is talking about that he gave a "common sense answer" to. Prior to hurricane Ike coming, I simply asked a question as to why wouldn't the cruise line refund their money because a hurricane was approaching. Carnival Cruise has yet to cancel that cruise that was supposed to sail out on Sept. 14. But my daughter (that's who I was asking for) and her husband could not even possibly get into Galveston to try to go on the cruise, as the island was being evacuated and no one was being allowed in.
By the way, Steve's "common sense answer" was extremely rude and hateful. That's why he was ridiculed. |

As much as like to cruise, I'm having second thoughts about the sanity of getting on a ship leaving any port at any time ever again......... |

I think it is just crazy for a cruise company to even have cruises out of Texas, and the Caribbean this time of year. I know Princess doesn't. They will go to the Caribbean during summer, but they leave out of NYC. That way they can divert to other places if a hurricane is coming. Like Tinker toy said, they are in it just to make money. Plus, you would only get a refund if the cruise company itself cancels the cruise. |

cruise ships do alternative routes when there are hurricanes. They are well aware of weather conditions in advance and most advertise new routes and I doubt any cruising round the caribbean at this time of the year |

I wouldn't worry about it really... cruise ships have the major advantage of being able to sail AWAY from hurricanes. The cruiselines deal with hurricanes this time of year, every year. So I suspect that they have a better idea of the dangers to the passengers and the ships than MOST other people. (Remember how costly it will be for them is passengers are hurt or killed because of a hurrican hitting the ship.)
So in short, I would totally get on one. |

The cruise lines deal with the hurricane factor every year. The have all kinds of fancy equipment available to them and they have people consulting them on the best course of action. If it is really dangerous for them to depart, they'll cancel the cruise. If they can cruise out of the danger zone then they'll continue the cruise.
Just a quick peak on the Wikipedia shows that the Carnival Conquest cost $500,000,000.00 to build. It can carry up to 2974 passengers and 1150 crew members. Do you think they would risk sinking that kind of investment? Even if they didn't care about the people, that is alot of money that won't do them any good at the bottom of the ocean. And the potential lawsuits! Even if the insurance would cover the hurricane problem (not sure if it would considered negligent behavior), the PR factor would be completely unacceptable. There are a lot of other cruise lines out there and no one wants to chose the one the kills people.
In truth, I'd have no problem with it. If the cruise line had a plan and thought it safe, I'd go. But hurricanes are incredible unpredictable. By the time it hits land, it could change course, decrease to a tropical storm, increase to a cat 4 or a number of other possibilities. The cruise line is smart to hold off making any type of decision until they have more information. Wouldn't it suck if they canceled the cruise now and it turned into nothing? It happens all the time in Florida, they cancel school or work and then the pending disaster turns left and we get bright sunny skies.
And announcing something on the website will only make people panic. It's best to wait until a decision is actually made. |
