Actually, used cruise ships change hands all the time... and as one might imagine, the cost varies pretty wildly, depending on the size, age, and condition of the ship.
If you wanted to buy a small-ish, 1970s era, 15-20k ton cruise liner in medium unrestored condition, I'd guess it would cost you 25-35 million dollars.
A nicer, newer 1980s era cruise liner (like the ones Carnival and RCI have been selling to secondary markets in recent years, would probably be closer to 50 million.
One that's already been rehabbed and is ready to receive passengers would be closer to 75 million.
Many of the old, retired, cruise liners are deemed too expensive to overhaul and operate (those 1970-80s type engines weren't as efficient) and they usually get sold to the scrapyards at Alang, India. |

Royal Caribbean is busy building the Genesis, which will, apparently, be the largest ship carrying 6400 passengers (not me, fer sure). The price tag is shown as 1.24BILLION dollars. |

Depending on the size of the ship, it can run between $250,000,000 and $1,200,000,000.
The Freedom of the Seas (currently the biggest cruise ship also with her sisters the Liberty of the Seas and the Independence of the Seas) cost $870,000,000
The Genesis ship (which will be the biggest cruise ship when launched in 2009) will cost $1,200,000,000.
The Queen Mary 2, which is the largest ocean liner, costs about $780,000,000. |
