How much should I expect to spend on a "typical" cruise?

I'm going on a 7 day Royal Caribbean cruise to Mexico. I've never been on a cruise before and I was wondering if anyone had any input regarding the average amount 2 adults might spend on a 7 day cruise (on the ship only).

I have been on 6 cruises with Royal and you will love it. If you don't include excursions, how much you spend will depend on how much you drink as that is the majority of the cost.

Figure a mid range bottle of wine for dinner is $30- $40, a few poolside drinks and a few after dinner drinks and you are probably looking at $300-$400 for the week. The only other costs would be if you wanted to go to the high end restaurants on board which are $20 or so per night per person but it is an exceptional experience.

The other big cost is the tips at the end - $3 per person, per day for the waiter and the room steward and $1.50 per day for the bus person.
Overall you are probably looking at $100-$120 for the tips.

You can buy booze in the gift shop on board at reasonable prices (duty free) to cut back on costs but it doesn't save much if you have to buy the mixers as well.

On tip though...if you can, try not to think too much about money...when you finish a trip and look back on the memory, you rarely remember how much you spent...Enjoy it..

Also the casino can cost you if you like to gamble..

Have a great time.

Food is included in your cruise price, as is tea, coffee and juice at breakfast. You pay for anything else you drink; beer about $6, drinks about $8. Wine can be purchased at supper for about $30 a bottle and up. Then there is the casino . . . Don't forget they charge a daily tip per person, l forget how much, maybe $15.

I think you should bring at least 1000 dollars that will cover you on ship and land.

Besides your tickets and excursions at port, it is usually about $700-1500. You have to figure even soda is ridiculous (like $2.50 a bottle), meals are mostly included (but you will probably eat out in mexico too), if there is gambling it will be higher end. There is no cash on most of the ships for food or shopping, you charge everything to your room and pay at the end. The pictures are a little pricey, but they sucker you in to at least a few. Spa and some of the shows can cost money (some shows are free, look for those too). My husband and I had a bill that came to $1200 after all was said and done, not too bad for the week vacation, but it was a little shock to us!!! That included shopping on the boat, sodas, alcohol, spa, meals, & pictures.

Have a great time!

How much you spend will depend almost entirely on whether and how much you drink alcoholic drinks and soft drinks, whether and how much you gamble in the casino, whether you do any shopping on board, whether you go to the spa, whether and how much you use the internet and telephone, whether you have laundry done for you, etc. The minimum you spend will be the daily tip amount posted to your account, so figure about 140 for that for 2 people. Beyond that, it's up to you. By the way, on board the ship everything will be charged to your account, which most people pay by credit card, although you can settle your bill with cash the last night if you prefer. For the casino, you can simply stick paper money into the machines rather than charge your account.

Have a great trip!

The basic cruise fare includes your room, meals in the regular dining rooms and buffets, room service, shows, and most ship facilities. Many ships also have free pizza, ice cream at various times. sushi, and hot dogs and hamburgers.

The extras are first tips. Figure about $10 per day per person for the tips to the room steward and wait staff. This is optional and some cruise lines automatically charge you. It can be adjusted or reversed at the end of the cruise. You should also tip a few dollars if you use room service. All bar drinks will have 15% added for a tip.

Many ships have alternate dining facilities that have a service charge of $15 on up. It may be a steak house or an Italian restaurant for example. There are also specialty coffee bars that have a charge. All bar drinks including sodas have a charge. The only free bar drinks are at the Captains Reception and the Repeat Cruiser Reception. Do not assume that the drinks being offered when you board are free. They are not. Bar drinks are $6 and up. Some ships are even charging for juice at any meal other than breakfast.

Some cruise lines sell a soda card for about $4 a day. It is only for fountain soda. Unless you have 3 sodas a day it is not worth it. You can also buy a specialty coffee card which gives you 15 for about the price of 12.

There is a charge for any personal service such as laundry, salons, private trainers, etc. Spa treatments are very expensive, $50-$100. There is also gambling which includes the casino, bingo ($10-$20 per session), and sometime deck games such as horse racing. A ship photographer will be taking pictures all over the ship and at special occasions. They cost over $10 each. Phone calls in the room are about $8 a minute. Some ships have cell phone service. You are charged for international roaming by your phone service at about $2.50 per minute. There is also a charge for using internet service on a ship but it is cheaper than phone calls.

Sundries are very expensive. Figure at least double the normal price. If you need a watch you will find no better prices anywhere.

Off ship excursions are expensive. They start at about $30 and can be in the hundreds. You can book them on the ship or go on your own. The ship will not leave without you if a cruise excursion is late. With one you did on your own they will not wait.
