How to find a boat trip to the U.K. form USA?

Hi, I am considering visitng a friend in the U.K, around Manchester or so. Rather than flying all the way, I thought a one way cruise or boat trip would be nice. I am not looking for a 7 day RoundTrip cruise, unless I can get off where I need to and finish the return home when readywetehr it is weeks or more down the road.
Problem is, I have been unable to find any sights, companies, prices, etc to attmept planning such an endeavor.
For a RT flight, with a stopover in Boston, was around $550. I still think a boat would be a much nicer, while much longer trip. Cost is a factor as well as the type of ship. I don't want to sail over on a cargo ship :)
Never been on a cruise, never been to the U.K. This is a huge adventure I am looking forward to.
Any and all suggestions on this topic are quite welcome, and appreciated. TY

Well if your looking cost, you should consider a cargo ship. You know a cruise ship is a floating hotel.A cargo ship that is allowed to carry passengers is realy good.Hey it's only a two day trip, you'll have a ball Talk to a travel agent.Bet you like your crossing so much, you'll plan to return the same way

TransAtlantic crossings are one way, BUT. the shortest ones are ten days( each way) and start at around $3,000 pp for the cheapest, smallest room.. double occupancy. you can expect to pay twice that if sailing alone.

Additionally.. transAtlanatic crusies are not sailed year round. expect to pay close to $10,000 total (or more) assuming you can even get a berth.. they sell out quite quickly.
