How windy are side balconies on cruise ships? Is it too windy to sit and enjoy a book? |

I just returned from a Disney cruise with a balcony room and I sat out there and read every morning and evening. Even with the tropical storms in the area I was fine. The balconies on the Disney Magic are very well protected, although it may vary by cruise line.
Enjoy your cruise! |

If you have good weather, then you can enjoy a book on the balcony. What I don't like about side balconies is the chairs. I don't think they are comfortable enough that I'd want to sit in them to read. I prefer loungers, and you'll find those on larger balconies (look aft). If I can't have an extra large balcony, I'll pass. (talk about balcony snob!) |

I loved our balcony. I got up every morning and read while I waited for the other people in the room to wake up, watched the sunset on the evenings we are going that direction and was able to watch the rescue of the Cubans from right above the drama. We dont always get balconies but when we do, have always enjoyed them |

Most of the time they are okay. You can sit and read or do what ever you want and not worry about the wind. However on overcast days and late in the evenings or early mornings. It can be very windy to sit out there. |

Only ever have a balcony.
Some days beautiful and calm and sunny with gentle cooling breeze as you read your book and your drink is rock steady on the table.
Other times raging storm, pitching and rolling, horizontal rain, dangerous to even go outside.
Overall it's a "must have". Love to go outside as soon as you wake up to see today's views! The odd bad times more than offset by the good times.

I don't find them windy at all, sometimes it's too cool or the rain comes, but let me just say, I would never cruise anything less then a balcony. I'm not a snob either. I just enjoy the sound and smell of the ocean, let alone the view. Very peaceful. |

I have never found side balconies to be very windy-- but note the position of the balcony on the ship. If there is nothing immediately forward of the balcony, you will get much more wind than if you are 1 balcony in the middle of a row of balconies.
We have cruised in side balcony cabins in French Polynesia, the Mediterranean, Central America, and Northern Europe, and we have never found the balcony to be too windy for reading-- the dividers on the balconies tend to make it a bit less windy than say, the promenade deck. It is sometimes a little windy, so I will bring a scarf or ponytail to tie my hair back so it doesn't get in my eyes. Think similar to reading on the beach with a light breeze. |
