yeah, the excursions through the cruise ships are pretty expensive. I dont really know about Cozumel, but in the caymans there is one thing that is a must (in my opinion) if you like to snorkel, and that is going out to stingray city!! You may be able to do it cheaper if you go a shore and book it yourself. I dont know how much you will save, and you have to be careful that you will be back in time. Its a once in a lifetime experience, and the kids will love it, and you are on vacation, spend a little and enjoy it!

The caymans are pretty modern (for the caribbean) so there isnt too much worry in going to a bad area, or about getting mugged or robbed or anything. In other words it pretty safe to go a shore and book your own excursions.

Go to cruisecritic.com and look under the ports you are going to. You will get a ton of info. You can do most things with local tour guides much cheaper than those offered on the ship. Remember that people go to these islands and stay at hotels so their are lots of tour guides besides the ones that give the ships a kick back.

Hooyah!
For Cozumel I can't really say. I had an excursion already booked before the trip. We didn't have anything planned for Grand Cayman. When we arrived, the were beach stands on the beach that rented beach/ water equipment. So I rented a snorkel and some fins and had a blast. I think I paid $15 for the entire day. It was GREAT! The water is crystal clear and the fish are amazing. I was even lucky enough to see a huge anchor that a ship had somehow lost. So don't worry about planning anything over the internet. Whenever I go on a cruise, there's always so many things to do/people offering their services to you as SOON as you get off the ship! Trust me, you'll have fun!

We just got back from a cruise that went to Grand Cayman, Montego Bay and Cozumel.

I have been to Cozumel several times and there are plenty of things to do there. If you go to the center of town you can window shop for hours and there are lots of things to see and do in the area. It's all along the ocean too, so you can even just go for a walk and take in the sights and sounds. You can check out the town square too as there are always neat artists and musicians there.

For the Cayman Islands I would do as someone else suggested and grab a cab have them take you to the beach and you can just lay around on the beach, snorkel, swim, etc. and it wouldn't cost that much at all. That's what we did when we were there and the only money we spent was on food.

You can always just by the snorkel gear and go to the beach. It won't cost you more than anything but the gear and at most the cost of a taxi to get to the beach.

Most excursions get pretty pricey pretty quick, though.
