A passport book is going to work better than a passport card, as you can later use the book to fly.
Although you can use your birth certificate and driver's license, many cruise lines want the book |

American citizens do not need passports for sea travel until June 1, 2009. Even then, cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port will probably be exempted from passport requirement. See site below. Some cruise lines want passengers to have passports, so call and ask their policy. |

In JUNE 2009 Anyone traveling out of the country will need a passport.
right now, you need proof of Identity. This usually is a Photo ID like drivers license, military ID.
Alot of people are getting passports to use now, as you will need them anyway in such a short time. Cruiselines are reminding people of the changing requirements.
best wishes.
cruisecritic.com has good info too,.

The rules requiring that everyone traveling out of the country on a cruise ship to absolutely have a passport do not go into effect until the summer of 2009 (next year). If you are going on your cruise in February 2009 to the Bahamas (or anywhere for that matter) YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT to reenter the US. What you will need is proof of US citizenship which can be your birth certificate, AND, proof of identity which can be a photo ID, like a driver's license, school ID, work ID.
However, most cruise lines are strongly recommending that all passengers have a passport, in part for you to be safe in case of an emergency that may require you to fly back to the US (such as if you got sick or were in an accident). Since you have a very long time before your cruise you should go ahead and apply for a passport.
Passports are issued by the US Passport Office which is a part of the US State Department; the cost is $100.00 and its good for 10 years You can start the process by going to the US Passport office web site
http://travel.state.gov/passport/passpor...
and print off a copy of the application, go to a travel agency, an AAA office or any place that does passport photos, maybe even Wal-Mart and get two passport photos. Then you will need a certified copy of your birth certificate to accompany your application. And finally you mail the application, passport photos, copy of your birth certificate and the fee for the passport which is $100 for adults, less for those under age 16 to the US Passport Office. The normal processing time is about 4 to 6 weeks. If you live in one of the cities with a Regional Passport Office you can call and make an appointment and get your passport in 2 weeks. As of now you do not need a passport for land or sea travel, you do for air travel. I think that as of January you will need a passport. Here is a general listing of what you need for a cruise...
All Guests claiming U.S. citizenship, including children, must present one of the following as proof of U.S. citizenship:
1)A valid, unexpired U.S. passport.
2)Original state issued Birth Certificate; additionally, Guests 18 years of age and older must present a photo ID issued by a Local, State or Federal Government agency.
3)Original Certificate of Naturalization; additionally, Guests 18 years of age and older must present a photo ID issued by a Local, State or Federal Government agency.
4)Original Certificate of Citizenship; additionally, Guests 18 years of age and older must present a photo ID issued by a Local, State or Federal Government agency.
5)Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad of U.S. Citizen; additionally, Guests 18 years of age and older must present a photo ID issued by a Local, State or Federal Government agency.
Note: I would definitely get in contact with the cruise line to verify what documents are needed. You do not want to get there and not be able to board. I think that in Jan the rules will change and a passport will then be required. I would call the cruise line and then head to a post office or something to get it taken care of. You will not get the passport the same day you apply for it, so make sure you leave enough time to apply and receive it by mail. |

you need a passport to travel to this place, and it does not take a long time to get one and they are good for 10 yrs. so why not get one for all your travel needs. you go to the postofficee and bring a copy of your birth cerfite with theoriginall seal on it or go have one made for you at the town hall where you where born and they can make a copy for you, you also need a lienesce or picture id and ss. card or number. cash or check to pay , if you have question call the post office and town hall they can help. |

I've been on two cruises to the Bahamas. Almost all cruise lines are registered out side the us ( Disney, Royal Carribean, Carnival, NCL, Crystal, Princess all are. ) so legally they have to make a stop in a foriegn country so naturally you'll need your passport |
