I'm training to be a fashion designer. My advice would be wear whatever you WANT to wear. The best two fashion accessories are comfort and confidence. As long as you feel good in what you are clothed in then there is no such thing as 'under' or 'over' dressed.

It's like music and asking how does one dance. You dance the way the music makes you feel and let the rythum be in your heart x

If you are going cruising on a ship with even a small number of American passengers, there is no chance that you will be overdressed.
Wear your long dresses and have a good time.
Getting your photograph taken on the ship on a formal night, when you're looking great is all part of the cruise experience and something that you will remember.

I promise you you have not wasted your money ,see how money formals you will have,they are on the days the ship is at sea,that's the best time for your long dresses also have cocktail dress or two,the very best way to find out is in the booklet they send it tells you every thing from dress code to meal times,we loved it, three generations of the same family,you will love it,and don't worry

I was just on the NAV in June. I, too, didn't think I was dressed fancy enough for dinner in the dining room, so I figured I'd eat in the Windjammer on formal night. Our waiter told me my outfit was fine (black dress pants, a little black top).

If you've already bought the dress, don't think of it as wasted money. Go to the spa, get all gussied up, and take some pictures around the ship. How often do you get to feel like a princess on a luxury ship?

There's usually two dressy evenings where long dresses will be ideal, otherwise you dress as if you're going to a nice restaurant on a Sat night, not over dressed. Nice casuals'll do. And certainly casual in the day time, shorts etc

let me put you at ease...I've sailed with p&o a few times and going again in september,and already booked for next year on the new ship ventura. And we cant wait,to get out of our scruff and into our best attire. i too felt a bit unsure the first time we went,but when we got dressed up for the captains night,every one was dressed in there fancy clothes and it was absolutly fantastic,let me assure you its money well spent,and you will be planning to buy more outfits for next year...remember though,you dont have to dress up if you dont want to,it just means you will have to eat somewhere else other than youre chosen restaurant,as they like you to comply with the dress code. relax ..take a deep breath and go and have a fantastic cruise,and i bet you will be booking again when you come back....bon-voyage.

I have been on many cruises - and a long formal dress is perfectly fine for formal night. I wear long dresses all the time. If you are on a 7 night cruise you will have 2 formal nights. Wear your long dresses and have fun. We enjoy dressing up every night while we are cruising - and we normally do!

formal night is optional and you can miss it, but dont worry abut being to formal as people really get fancy which is fine.

BTW, have fun on naigator, i went on that ship 4 years ago, lovely.

I have seen short formal dresses to long formal dresses..its your choice! Or you can skip out all together. I've worn both and never felt out of place! Cruising is all about what you make it...so have fun and do what you feel!

I'm guessing youre a girl, ha ha. I havent seen your other questions on this subject but I went on a cruise with P&O about 1999 and all the women wore long dresses or cocktail dresses. Dont worry, you wont be overdressed in the evenings, but stick to shorts and sandals in the daytime.
I've got 3 further pieces of advice (1) Take Lemsip & aspirins etc because if one person on the ship has flu everybody gets it because the germs go round like wildfire via the air conditioning. After a week you will be poorly, I guarantee it. (2) Keep away from the Chief Engineer (I could name names) who enjoys posing in his white uniform and thinks he's a charmer (shows you falling stars on deck at midnight etc) but actually is very obvious, who courts you until he gets your knickers off and then dumps you on the last night. B*****d! (3) Lock your underwear up in your suitcase or wardrobe because the guys who come in and clean your cabin go through it and steal your best undies. Honest I am telling you the truth here!

From what I have seen, it is virtually impossible to be too overdressed on formal nights. You will see a few people in basic dresses, and many that look like they are going to the prom or the Oscars. Enjoy and have fun. It's great to dress up to the nines for pictures. Formal night pictures turn out fabulously.
