The legal drinking age on ALL cruise lines is age 21 and over. AND, it does not matter whether you are in international waters, whether you are docked in a foreign port, or that you sailed from a port in Europe or South America. Its 21 all over and the cruise lines do enforce the rule.
The ONLY exception to this rule is if a person under the age of 21 is cruising with a parent the parent can if he/she wants sign a waiver that allows the minor to have beer and/or wine. Otherwise when each person under the legal drinking age boards ship his/her cruise card that is use as the room key and charge card for everything on ship contains a restriction that prohibits that person from purchasing alcoholic beverages.
So if you want your kid to have wine/beer then ask for and complete the waiver form. |

On Carnival the legal drinking age is 21 the same as in the US where the cruise line is based. If you are visiting the various Caribbean ports the drinking age is generally 18 but they will serve pretty much anyone. Having said that I went on a Carnival Cruise last June with my entire family including my 18 year old daughter and my son's 19 year old girlfriend. Although they would not serve them they allowed me to purchase drinks for them. Your sign and sail card has your photo and birth date on it so the will not let you charge alcohol to a card held by someone under 18. So if you are worried about your 19 year old going out and getting trashed that is pretty unlikely unless someone older is purchasing the alcohol. |

The drinking age on Carnival is 21. While at the ports whatever thier drinking age is , usually 18 or 19, then they can drink on the island. My 18 year old couldnt even sit at the bar near the casino, which was fine with me. |

As of 2006 all cruise lines changed the drinking age to 21, and you must be 21 the day the ship sets sail or the cruiseline will not consider you 21. Many people may say it's 18 once in Non-American waters, but it's not and there is no longer a waiver as well. (I was handed a letter as I boarded a ship in 2006 about the new rules) |

Depends what waters the cruise ship is in at the time, in the USA it would be 21, in the UK it would 18 etc etc. As I have no idea what a carnival cruise is I cant answer very well, but if your in international waters their is no legal reason why you cant drink all you want, but the ship may not sell you alcohol though, under its own rules and regulations. |

On Carnival, 21 is the legal drinking age. Carnival does NOT have a parental waiver or any exceptions based on destination (RCI, Celebrity and Azamara do, which can cause confusion).
That said, if you want to buy your son a drink and both of you are responsible and low-key about the whole thing (don't talk about it to the bartender) you'll be fine.
You might want to check out this article, which explains each cruise line's policy and has links to their exact rules on their sites:

BTW, not sure if this is your first cruise, but you might enjoy the "know before you go" guide which has a packing checklist, tips on how to stay healthy onboard, etc:

Have a great cruise! |
