I am going on a cruise and have bad motion sickness problems. What is the best way to get dramamine?

I keep getting conflicing advice. There are pills on the ship. The pharmacy has the bracelets. Others tell me to see a doctor. Some say the pills and bracelets are on the ship, others say I have to go to a doctor, some say I can get them over the counter at the pharmacy. Please advise, and any other cruise tips. Thanks!

I'll try not to confuse you any more, but all of your conflicting advice was correct.

The ship does have dramamine on board. Every ship I've been on offered it just for the asking. Most will have patches at several locations on the ship, but pills can also be provided.

Dramamine comes in pills, patches and bracelets. For people who don't normally get seasick, pills are great (what I used), for people who are prone to seasickness the patch is very popular as a preventive measure.

If you know you have a major problem with motion sickness, you might want to give your personal doctor a call. He knows you and your medical history better than us or the ships doctor.

While small boats or reading in a car will turn me green in minutes, I've only become seasick on a cruise once. The newer ships have stabilizers, which make a BIG difference.

The only time I got sick was years ago, on an older smaller ship, that was going through a major storm. It was so bad, that even the crew was turning green.

If you do ever feel a bit seasick, all you need to do is look outside, or better yet step outside. Oversimplified explanation.... the eyes and inner ear can get on the same page, it's when the get conflicting info, you get sea sick.

As for other tips, there are too many to list. The best ones:

Pack your bags, remove half of what you packed, close bags.

If you aren't going on NCL freestyle, pick one pair of shoes that go with your formal dress and semi formal dress.

Don't take new walking shoes! Who need blisters, a nice broken in pair works much better.

Don't worry about what you may forget to pack. You can buy most any real needed item on ship and any other item at your first port of call.

Don't worry about what others will think, you'll never see these people again. If you want white wine with red meat do it! You don't have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe of clothing... unless you just want to.

Have fun!

Don't know about if they are on cruise ships, probably are. But you can get dramamine over the counter at any pharmacy or discount store. Do it all the time.

You can do a drug store, a pharmacia(if you're in port) or shipside from the medical office.

If you do the shipside, it'll be more expensive than what you would get on land.

any drug store...it's sold over the counter

You'll be fine. Cruise ship hardly rock much as little boat. Unless your in a bad weather. Have a bag ready next to you.

Every cruise ship has plenty of dramamine. I don't have any problems getting motion sickness. Most times you hardly feel the ship rocking.

One bit of advice, get a room closest to the bottom of the ship as you can. The closer you are to the ocean, the less movement you feel. Also, try to get a room in the center of the ship. This will help you out tremedously.

I'm a frequent sailor and I bring young and not so young to sea. The more you reckon you will get sick the more it is likely to happen. others have told you where to get Dramamine. I'll just tell you that Dramimne can make you very sleepy.

I've never sen anyone sea-sick while lying down but that's not much good when you want to enjoy the trip is it?. Unless you have experienced otherwise, and know something i don't know, modern ships have stabilisers to stop then the pitching, rolling and yawing which aggravates motion sickness.

We give kids frequent drinks of ginger beer/ale, the stronger and hotter the better. And ginger biscuits. There is something in ginger that works!

The other thing we do is keep the kids busy, washing decks, cleaning up, steering the ship, plotting courses. I've never seen anyone getting quesy when they are working.

We also get them to look out for other boats and seals and dolphins and all that. They rarely see anything but it keeps them occupied.

Are we getting anywhere? I want you to enjoy your trip.

My first cruise, I was surprised to find out I was VERY seasick! (I wanted off that boat NOW!) I started taking the pills they give you at the front desk and did MUCH better. My second cruise (yes, it was worth going back even after getting sick!) I got the patch from my doctor. I found that I was tired a lot and one day I accidentally touched the patch and then my eye. My pupil blew up completely and I had to keep sunglasses on the rest of the cruise. My third cruise, I did significantly better. (Either that or I just couldn't tell drunk from seasick). My fourth, I didn't need anything. My recommendation would be to stick with the pills they give you at the desk and take them only as needed. You might be surprised. With the larger ships and stabilizers, you might not need anything.

You can get pills for motion sickness on the ship, they will provide them to you for free, you just have to ask. The pills are fine, but they do tend to cause drowsiness, which is no fun when you're trying to stay awake enough to have a good time. I would definately recommend the patches. I have taken my parents on 4 cruises and we always get the motion sickness patches from the doctor before we go on vacation and the only time we ever had any problems with motion sickness was one time when we forgot to put the patch on, LOL! I think the patches are available on the ship, but I don't believe those are free, so I would definately recommend getting them from your doctor before you leave. There are over the counter medicines and patches, but they usually aren't as good as the one's you get from the doctor, so if you know you are prone to bad motion sickness I would not recommend getting the OTC kind. Hope this helps and good luck and HAVE FUN!!!!!
