Chances are, they won't turn you away on formal night if you're not dressed up. But jeans are [or should be!] out! It doesn't take that much to dress up. For a woman, some dressy black pants with a couple of different "sparkly" or dressy tops. A guy can get by with a jacket and tie, although some men will be wearing tuxes.

Dressing up is part of the fun. If you don't want to dress up, you can go to one of the more casual venues or the buffet.

Have a great cruise!

Well, on most cruises, there are two nights in which you must dress up to attend dinner. It is not required but you will look very awkward if you are not. The rest of the time on the ship, you can just where a bathing suit if you truly wish. You'll have fun though, I have been on 3 cruises myself and even the formal dinners are fun.

usually on the 7 or more night cruises, there are 2 formal nights at the restaurant, i don't think you HAVE to dress up, but everyone else will be in their formal attire. There are also usually other restaurant choices, if you don't want to attend formal night.

like someone else said, the rest of the time, you can stay in your bathing suit if you want, but for supper in the restaurant, you need to put actual clothes on(casual when its not formal)

I have not cruised on the Independence but I have been on it's twin sister the Freedom and on many Royal Caribbean cruises. All you need to know is that the formal nights are REQUESTED but not required attire. You will not be denied entry to the main dining room or any other activity or place if you decide not to dress up, as long as you are at least sports casual. But most people do dress up; a gown or party dress for women and a suit or tux for men. Some people dress up both formal nights, some don't. We always take the formal stuff off after dinner and a photo or two and go back to casual stuff. And on formal nights there are always people walking around in casual attire. No one is going to go tell you to go dress up more. None of the other passengers will likely even notice, unless you wear something outlandish.

Travel light - for the guy - a nice sport jacket and slacks - nice looking golf shirt. ..remember you are on vacation. For the gals - a nice skirt and a pretty top (skirt solid color) top colorful and fun.

I went on my first cruise last year and didn't dress up. We also met friends on the boat that wore jeans to the formal evening. These is no need for suits and evening dressed but a nice shirt for a guy and maybe a summer dress or linen trousers and nice tunic for a girl. Whatever you feel comfortable in, because you won't have fun otherwise.

Only on formal nights and you are not forced to even dress up then. It is just an option.
