Civitavecchia is an hour or more by car, bus or train from Rome and I would not recommend doing a tour on your own from that port city. You can take a train, van service, or a taxi but its a good hours drive on a highway and you can get caught in traffic, as we did when we did our tour there. That could delay you getting to the city and also getting back to the ship. On our tour we were an hour late getting back to the ship and missed dinner. But since we were on a ship sponsored tour the ship waited for us. If you go on your own the ship will not wait for you.

Here are some references for you if you do decide to go on your own. You can take the train or arrange for limo/van service. You should also check to see if your cruise line has an "on your own" tour that essentially provides only a round trip bus for you with a drop off in Rome. Our cruise did have that and I would suggest as an option.

Well rome is an hour of buss travel away from civitiveccia. See if your cl has a shore tour that includs buss transfer only. Then youll be dropped of in the city centre and have most of the day of your own. If you go on your own be awere that youll HAVE to be onboard no later than 30 minutes before stated departure time. i would not go by yourself without a tour from the ship because it is like everyone else said about 1 hour away and if you dont get back in time the ship will leave you for sure

There's a train. It costs about 10 Euros and plan on it taking 1-2 hours each way.

Take the shuttle bus from the ship to town. With the water at your back, turn right. Walk down the road by the water for about 5-10 minutes and you'll see the train station. You can get a schedule there.

For more info, go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards", then "Ports of Call". There's a ton of info there from experienced cruisers.

Have a great cruise!
