Crystal, Yachts of Seabourn, or Regent Seven Seas are a higher class cruise line than Royal Caribbean, Princess, or Carnival. If you want a five star experience, I would recommend looking into on of these lines.

Princess is very classy, but for the top of the line, try crystal cruises. They have been named the best by Conde Naste magazine. For myself, Princess is perfect and I can't see spending the prices that crystal has for a cruise. I'm going to Hawaii this end of October with Princess. It leaves out of Los Angeles in case you are interested. I would bet they still have some cabins available. I'm in my 50's too. This will be cruise #9 for me, all with Princess, so that tells you how much I like Princess. |

"....smart..." and yet you started out your sentence "I and a girlfriend..." (just kidding - jealous cause I would love to do that with my friends...)
I recommend Princess Line or Carnival. |

You don't want Carnival [the ships are way-over-the-top-Vegas-glitz] or Royal Caribbean or Norwegian.
Princess might do. Celebrity would be great [but probably only four-star], as would Holland America [also four-star]. Those are all "mass-market" lines that are reasonably priced.
For five-star, you'd need to go to the "luxury" lines, such as Crystal, Seaborne, etc.
To compare the lines and ships, you can go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Reviews" or "Cruise Styles" and see what you think. |

Deffinately not carnival, terrible budget line. I am a fan of royal caribbean but for a luxury culture filled cruise i wouldnt go with them. try crystal, seabourne yachts, cunard, regent sevan seas, princess, or celebtriy.
Crystal: This is probably the best known of the luxury lines and the one operating the largest ships.
Seabourn: Very small yacht like ships with very few passenger and personalized service. Smaller ships like these go to destinations the big ships simply can't.
Cunard: The only line still available that offers classic ocean liner-type cruise. And while they do opperate some of the biggest ships in the world, they are favored by a mostly older cliantele. It's a very low pace cruise line that visits a few exotic destinations. The ships themselves are floating resorts with unparalelled luxury. they are also the only cruise line that still operates the traditional transatlantic crossings of older ocean liners, bringing back a golden age when rich people and immigrants alike travelled across the atlantic in search for a better life. the reason as to why i listed crystal as having the largest luxury ships is because even tho cunard has larger ships, they are technicaly not a luxury line, but a premium line. But the ships are actualy much bigger.
Regent Seven Seas: I have never cruised with them before. Look them up at www.cruisecritic.com
Princess: Huge ships but still maintain personalized service. And like the cruise line below this, its more upscale.
Celebrity: Big ships that (like Princess) are more upscale
For those who just want to see destinations rather than the ships themselves. River cruiseing is the way to go. They can fit down narrow canals and rivers that big ships simply can't. They are a very great way to explore europe. The crew most often outnumbers the passengers. There is typicaly only one restaraunt, a lounge and/or bar, and if you are luck a small pool and/or jaccuzii. Most river cruise ships are long, narrow, and low in the water. They rarely have over 3 decks.
For river cruising i always go with grand circle small ship cruises. They don;t have the entertainment of the big ships but the destinations are entertainment in themselves. Great for history buffs but be sure to pack somfortable walking shoes because there is ALOT of walking, and if you have bad feet, steer clear of this altogether. The food is very fresh and delicious. They bring the food onboard while inport so it is very fresh.
Overall im sure you will have a great time
Hope i helped
Bon Voyage |

If you really want 5***** then SilverSea is the way to go. It is top of the top, beauty, class, culture etc......
They only have suites on their ship, smaller ships and first class all the way. |
