I get seasick. Will I get sick on a cruise?

I get majorly seasick, and the last time I got seasick, I was on one of those whale watching boats. It happened within 15 minutes of being on the stupid boat and then I just cried the whole time I felt so horrible.

My friends all want to take a cruise to the Caribbean, but I'm terrified I'll be vomiting and miserable the whole time. Everyone keeps telling me that you can't feel the boat move because it's so big, but I get seasick faster and more severe than anyone else I know.

Anyone with horrible seasickness out there who's had a good cruise?

The Caribbean is awesome.
My wife, who gets motion sickness, and I are going on our 3rd Caribbean cruise in May.
After our 1st cruise, in which she got sick several times, she bought some seasick pills in the drug store, and they eliminated all her problems on our subsequent 5 cruises.
Buy the pills, take the cruise, have a great time!

Take pills.
I also get seasick, and I have been on multiple cruises and have been fine.
The boat is so big, that waves do not affect it as much and you can only feel the boat really moving when there are large waves, which is rarely.

My mother in law gets seasick and still really enjoys cruising. She gets some sort of little patch thing that goes behind the ear just in case. The only time I've ever had a problem was when hurricane Ivan interrupted our cruise. I love cruising - I've been on 7!

you may get seasick, the bigger the boat, the easier it's going to be for your body to get used to it, because it rocks less. However EVERY SINGLE cruise I've ever been on sells these neato things that a TON of people on the cruise wear that prevents them from being sick... so as long as you get those pressure point thingies, you'll be fine.

Those cruise ships have pretty good stabilization equipment on them, so it should be pretty smooth, but even then, it's not going to be perfect and there might be times when the system does not work. There are seasick patches to get plus, a nurse I know says that ginger pills are helpful as well.

I get seasick sometimes, too. All you have to do is remember to take dramamine every morning, even before you board the cruise ship!! It worked great for my mom (she gets seasick easily) when she went on her cruise, but then again the sea was very smooth. You really cant feel the ship rocking because it is so big, but at some times you can and especially if the sea is rough. Just remember to buy some of that dramamine!! Have fun =D

Cruise boats are large. Take medicine, ( i suggest Bonine ) and you should be fine.

If your still worried, a good tip, is to try to get a cabin Mid Ship. Your less likely to get sick there.

If you have to tender from the ship to the island, and you get sick easy, theres chance on getting sick on this. Its only about 15 minutes on a small boat.

Hope it helps

I suggest you see your doctor and get a prescription for Promethazine 25 mg. It works far better than anything you can get over the counter and is worth its weight in gold! It can also be taken by people with heart disease who have to take various medicines. I never got seasick until I had to take lots of prescriptions after a heart attack and 3 major surgeries, and then got hit like a ton of bricks. Well, the Promethazine works 100%! You need to get a prescription from your doctor. While the Caribbean is generally fairly calm, I suggest you get this stuff anyway, and take it! It's a matter of 1 pill every 12 hours. Don't throw away the cost of a cruise being miserable just to save some money on a doctor's visit, and don't listen to people who pooh-pooh how serious and debilitating seasickness really can be. Go to the doctor, swallow the pills, and go have a great time!

people are right about not being able to feel it move when you're walking around, but my bed was placed horizontally in my room so i rocked from head to toe and i felt sick almost every night. and since i was doing a Caribbean cruise i spent a day out on St. Maartin and i got too much sun and i was sick for the last half of my cruise from a combination of heat and motion sickness... it was miserable... i didn't eat more than a piece of toast over about 3 days (not the same piece of toast, don't worry :P) but hey! i didn't gain any weight :D

Most ships have good stabilization systems, but they still can get rocky. I wouldn't leave it to chance. Either try Bonine (a Dramamine equivalent that doesn't make you sleepy and still allows you to drink). Or, check with your doctor before you leave to get the patches you place behind your ear. You'll see a lot of people on the ships with these patches.

The key is to put it on (or take the pills) BEFORE you get on the ship and set sail. Then follow the medication timetable to a tee.

Also, avoid looking at the sea for prolonged periods of time. There's plenty to see on the ships - just look at everything else!

Experienced with 14 cruises - and used to experience motion sickness as a child. Either I've grown out of it - or it's not so bad.

These people must not get sea sickness. Take it from me, you feel it ALL.
Even still, people that don't get sea sickness must not recall. I have been on 4 cruises and everyone of them you will see people drifting from wall to wall walking down the hallway. There is a lot of motion.

However, as mentioned, I have benn on 4, the first one I took the advice of "it's too big to feel it", big mistake. Once my ear patch kicked in I was fine though.

The previous poster hit the nail on the head, apply your patch BEFORE boarding and follow the replacement to a 'T'.

One cruise I decided since I would be off the ship the following day I would replace the patch a day early. DO NOT DO THIS. Although there was no sickness, I lost my short vision. I had to have people read my menu to me at dinner.

Hi.

Always take fresh air.. don't think about getting sick, keep an eye on the horizon.

I suggest that if your friends want you to go on a cruise, is to select a cabin midship.

There is TravelCalm with natural Ginger, best advice is to take it the night before, and then another one in the morning. Then there is a wristband.

Another idea is to clean your ears, nothing worse than blocked ears

"Our sense of balance is inside the ear
Inside the inner ear is a series of canals filled with fluid, called the labyrinth, which includes the semicircular canals. The three semicircular canals are at different angles. When the head is moved, the rolling of the fluid inside these canals tells the brain exactly how far, how fast and in what direction the head is moving.

Information from these canals is passed along to the brain via the vestibular nerve, which lies next to the cochlear nerve. If the brain knows the position of the head, it can work out the position of the rest of the body. The brain also relies on information from the eyes and from the muscles themselves (called ‘muscle sense’ or kinaesthesia). The brain uses the inner ear, the eyes and muscles to pinpoint the position of the body at all times."

" Anxiety contributes to motion sickness
A person who has experienced motion sickness before may make their symptoms worse on future trips by expecting to feel sick. They may even feel nauseous before the actual ride. This psychological input is called ‘conditioned reflex’.

Long term exposure
If a person with motion sickness doesn’t stop moving, they will start vomiting. Eventually, dehydration, exhaustion and a dangerous drop in blood pressure can occur. However, if a person is exposed to motion for an extended period - for example, during a long journey by sea - their body and brain will adapt in time to the constant motion and will no longer trigger episodes of sickness."
Medications are preventative, not curative
Medications either calm the nerves of the inner ear or soothe the brain’s vomiting centre. However, most motion sickness pills are only effective if they are taken before you feel sick. In many cases, motion sickness pills can induce drowsiness as a side effect. You may need to experiment with the different drugs available to find which one works best for you. Ask your doctor or chemist for further information.

Research suggests that ginger can help to ease the symptoms of motion sickness. You could chew on raw ginger or make a quick tea by adding minced ginger to boiling water.

Where to get help
Your doctor

Psychologist
Things to remember
Our primary sense of balance is a series of fluid-filled canals inside the inner ear.
Conflicting sensory information can trigger motion sickness.
Symptoms include nausea, dizziness, sweating, pallor and voming
