I live in NY--is it better to depart for a cruise from NY or to fly to Florida and depart from there?

Going to Caribbean or Bahamas

To save time and money, your best bet is to leave from your home port. New York port or Cape Liberty port are the closest.

I live in NJ and have taken cruises out of both places. My choice is NY (or Port Liberty in NJ). I can travel with one or maybe 2 suitcases but my dear wife has many more. So the hassel of the luggage is so much less out of a local port. (Even before the recent events)

You have someone bring you to the pier (friend, taxi or drive yourself) and the vacation starts then, not get your luggage - hall it to the ship and then starting.

NY (or NJ ) is my pick !!

It depends on what you're looking for. If you want to spend more time in the Caribbean and visit many islands you would have a better chance if you left from Florida. Look into airfare, typically you can find some good deals from NYC to Florida. If you're flying to Miami you can also find cheap flights to Fort Lauderdale which is 30 minutes from Miami and can save you money on airfare. If you want to spend a lot of time on the boat and save money then I would recommend the cruise that leaves from NY. Good luck!

I live in Jersey and have taken 2 cruises..one departing from Philly and one from Port Liberty. I feel that leaving from a port that is close to home is GREAT! If you fly to Fl, then you have to account for those days, making sure your flight is not delayed and you miss the boat. These two ports were convenient and ran amazingly smooth! The do have long term parking, which is 10 bucks a day, if you don't have someone that could drop you off and pick you up. We used long term parking and it was fine!
Royal Caribbean cruise line has these local ports and it was a great cruise line!

If there is a cruise ship departing from both states to the same destination, save the airfare and use the ship from NY. However, your departure point depends on which cruise destination and ship you prefer. In order to determine which you want, research several ships/cruise lines with a travel agent, who has more experience with them. Inside (no window) cabins are less expensive and are the same size as outside (with porthole/window), but that is to be discussed also. If you don't intend to be in the room alot, consider inside. However, balconies are nice. You can sit on them and relax, where a porthole just gives you light and a slight view.
Whatever you do, go with the attitude that you will never see your shipmates again, so you can be a little freer to enjoy life, (Don't go nuts, though). ENJOY.

It depends on whether sea days or port days are more important. A 7 day cruise from fla will usually have 3 or 4 port days, where one leaving from NY will have less. Also, the ones leaving from NY tend to spend more time going to the bahamas and key west instead of going deeper into the carribean where the better ports are.

Depends on where the cruise ship's itinerary and if that's what you want to do.

Cunard does transatlantic crossings on the QM2 out of NYC and some lines offer NYC to Bermuda during the summer season.

In the fall there are cruises out of NYC along the east coast to Canada and some are starting to offer a limited amount of cruises from NYC to the Caribbean to reposition their ships from the Canada sailing s in the Fall to the Caribbean in the Winter. If you want a broader selection of itineraries to choose from you may have to fly to a port in FL, TX, CA (for W. Mexico & Hawaii) or WA for Alaska sailings.

Hope this helps.
