I'd suggest that you check out some of the trip reports and reviews on Cruise Critic. The experience can vary widely between ships, between itineraries on the same ship, or even for two people on the same ship at the same time!
Decide what is important to you and weigh the comments you read. Some people are never going to be pleased. Others go with the flow.

Some people swear by Carnival, it is kinda known as the party ship/young ship. I agree with other post check out the ship you picked on cruisecritic.com and read the reviews of people that just went. Remember that people like to complain so read it carefully all ships do their best to make you happy. My mother just went on the Valor and said it was not her favorite ship but it was nice and the food was excellent. FYI our fav is Holland America so far. If money is no object she went on Crystal and that is her all time favorite.

Carnival cruises are fun, I had a good time with my friends. You get a lot for the money you pay, and unlimited eating. It's always something to do, and so much shopping too. It's cool because you don't use cash, instead they have like a carnival card that you use and it bills you for alcoholic beverages and sodas (which are not included on any cruise line :-() I absolutely had a ball.

I think it is okay... You pretty much get what you pay for.. There will probably be people trying to sale you timeshares and take up your time, no doubt, somewhere along the line.

Depends on which ship you are taking. Carnival has some nice ships but the vacation on one of their lesser ships can be a bad thing. I prefer the other cruise lines overall.
