Lola

I need some help with cruses. Advice please!?

Ok, well, i want to go on a cruse next year with my mom [my treat] and i understand the pricing, i think. I know that you pay per person and you can select the type of room you'd want [ocean view, balcony, etc] but if i wanted a cruse to England, would the cruse ship come to america first, get us and bring us there and we go to towns and the stops or whatever, or do i need a plane, fly there, then go to the English port, go on the cruse ship, then go to the stops, like if it were to go to France the spain or something? I just dont understand how that works. Could you give me some info on that and any other advice you think a first timer should know?

You can cruise from the US to England, leaving from New York city on Cunard Cruise line. But when you get to England your cruise is over and if you want to see other places you have to arrange your own land tours or go with a tour company. But this would be separate from the cruise.

OR, you can fly to England and then have your choice of a number of itineraries and cities you can visit. England has three ports that cruise ships depart from; Dover, Southampton, and Harwich. So you have a lot of options for itineraries including the Mediterranean and northern Europe.
Here's a link to some cruises out of England: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/cruiseDetails/itineraryAndPricing.do;jsessionid=0000JE5EiYAVJd4jQI8GF9UClYE:12hbiocus?packageCode=VY11M018&date=20092&selectedCurrencyCode=&promoType=&hasSenior=&hasMilitary=&state=

The cruise lines that I suggest are Holland America, Princess, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. I have done three cruises in Europe, one on Royal and one on Celebrity. When you go to the cruise line web sites you have to search for cruises to Europe and then you will have to do multiple search from the cruise ports in Europe.

On one of our cruises in Europe we flew to London and then took the train to Paris for a couple days. Then took the train back to London for a few days and then went to the cruise port for our cruise. That may be what you want to do also. The train from London to Paris is very fast (a couple hrs), it's pretty cheap and there are trains all day long. Then we took the train to the cruise port.

You can do it either way. You can cruise from the U.S., usually from NYC to Europe, or you can fly to Europe and start your cruise from there. It all depends on where you want to go and what you want to see. I have done 2 cruises in Europe. The first one was to European capitals and the other one was to the Mediterranean. Both of those cruises started and ended in Europe. A cruise from the USA to Europe is called a trans Atlantic cruise. Both Cunard and Princess do these kind of cruises. The best thing you can do is to talk to a cruise specialists and get all the details you need to choose the cruise that best suits you and your mom.

Typically, most people will choose to fly to say Barcelona Spain and board a cruise for 7-12 days and cruise the Mediterranean stopping in many different places. Then after the cruise is done you can fly back. That is probably the most cost efficient way and will take the least amount of time.

Other options would be a transatlantic cruise where you start in the U.S. by boarding a cruise ship and you may visit a few U.S. or Caribbean places then you would sail across the ocean to say a few places in the Mediterranean and then you would get off the ship in a place like Barcelona and then fly home. (This can be done in reverse too, but usually these one way transatlantic sailings are about 12-15 nights.)

There are sailings that start in the U.S. and go overseas and come back, but of course those are much longer than the 15 days.

Hope this helps and if you need anymore advice, just send me an e-mail.

There are huge options for cruises. And as mentioned many times you can cruise just in Europe or you can do a Transatlantic. One of the biggest things you'll want to consider is how many days you want your cruise to be and how many ports you'll want to see. If you've only got a week - you can do a straight cruise from New york to England with no ports along the way. Perfect if you just like to be on the ship. However, if you want to visit different countries and do land excursions, this one will not be for you.
Then you have to decide if you want a longer cruise (10-13 days) that will stop in a number of ports such as these examples: http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=26807
http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=27327
Or if you don't want to extend your cruise but still want ports, you'll need to get round trip airfare. You'll have less days at sea and you'll get to see some great stuff. Here are a few examples:
http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=15320
http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=22416

Whenever I'll hunting for a new cruise I always go to
http://www.vacationstogo.com/ticker.cfm to do my initial window shopping. It's a great place to check out all your options and play with different itineraries.

Hello,

I think a 1st timer has plenty of questions that can be answered by a travel agent or cruise agent. Speak in person with someone.
good luck

some cruises go from ports in europe, some go from new york city (trans-atlantic) to other ports

what i would suggest is talking with a really good travel agent. They can give you suggestions and tips for the cruise of a lifetime.
