Joe.R

I recently decided that I want to devote as much of my life as possible ?

to travelling the world. I work a ?
regular job and make about $55,000/yr. I get 4 weeks vacation a year. I want to save as much as possible on other expenses and get in at least 4 vacations a year to different parts of the world. I have a friend who wants to do the same with me (we already went on one trip to Panama).
My question is: What tips or advice should I have now that travelling the world will be a life-long pursuit? Are there any tricks, or inside information I should know, such as getting the best deals, stretching my dollar, etc? Are there any websites that I should know? Anyone out there with a similar interest in world travel that can share?

I am kind of doing the same thing. I don't travel in style, but I travel a lot.

Some tips that I follow:
Airfare: don't buy your airfare around your vacations - plan your vacations around your airfare. My trip to Puerto Rico & my first trip to Costa Rica were not really planned. I got my travelzoo newsletter and said "Holy crap! Thats a great deal on airfare!" and I bought it!

Lodging: If you are traveling alone - get the cheapest room possible. I'm not above camping to save money. If I'm going with a big group upgrade your lodging. A $200.00 a night room divided 4 ways is a very affordable luxury. I'm also not above staying at Hostels (many of them have private rooms). Or staying at Inns that have shared bathrooms.

Activities: Try to look for combination deals on activities. For instance in Reykjavik I found an excursion that picked us up at the airport, took us to breakfast, got us 2 hours in the Blue Lagoon Spa and a 2 hour whale watching trip and ended by dropping us off at our hotel. affordableor this was maybe 25% more than what a cab ride from the airport to our hotel would have been. Great deal!

Check out off-season deals. In Costa Rica everything goes up during the dry season. I always travel during the Green Season and wind up with some great deals.

Plan! Plan! Plan! This is the secret to making a trip both affortable and great. I don't get ripped off by cab drivers in San Jose, I know which Metro pass will best meet my needs in Paris, and I know the cheapest way to eat in Reykjavik. The less I plan, the more I spend and the less I do. I prefer to get the biggest bang for my buck. So I plan well to ensure I have a great trip.

Feel free to email me with any specific questions you have. I love to travel and I could talk about my experiences for hours. I'd be happy to share any knowledge I have gained to help you accomplish similiar adventures.

Time travler
Lots of us on this site think the same way. I started cruising the Caribbean first. Then I got addicted to cruising. After that, I would save my money for the next year and go cruising again. After the first cruise you learn to really watch how much alcohol you drink, are very picky about shore excursion, don't Gamble on the ship, and yes, even watch what you eat. No more gaining 1 to 2 pounds a day for me. My last cruise was a 29 day repositioning cruise from Australia to Los Angeles. These repositioning cruises are a great deal at great prices. They come only once a year so you must book early. Also, if you stick with one or two cruise lines, your benefits really add up, like now I pretty much get free internet, plus I always get ship credit. This is after only 8 cruises with Princess. One last thing, for long cruises, it really helps if you pay all your bills on line. You can do that while cruising.

look into something like this:

106 days on Crystal's Crystal Serenity
departs January 21, 2009
With 46 ports of call in 17 countries, Crystal's 106-day Pacific region cruise promises to be one of its most diverse voyages yet. You'll sail from the aquamarine waters of Polynesia to the exotic flavors and cultures of Asia to the rugged glacial beauty of Alaska
