I have been on many cruises and thus seen and heard from ships' officers in the captain's get together, and in some cases met, the captains of many cruise ships. Normally the ship's captain will address all passengers before one of the shows on ship, usually on a formal dress night. If you are a frequent cruise club member for cruise liens you get invited to special cocktail parties where the captain addresses the group and sometimes answers questions. Also, on the first day of cruises the newsletter passed out to each passenger generally has information about the ship and the major officers, including the captain.

So from all of this I have learned that the cruise ship captain is usually promoted there from a subordinate officer position on ship, either the same one or a different one. The bottom line is the ship's captain is a person who has years of experience in managing a ship and steering it through a variety of water. The profession is just like many others, you must work your way up.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line made history recently when it selected the first woman ever to be a cruise ship captain.

This is from a cruise news web site:

"A Swedish woman has been named master of the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Monarch of the Seas, becoming the first female captain to command a major cruise ship.

Karin Stahre-Janson, who previously served as staff captain, the No. 2 position on Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, and Majesty of the Seas, will assume her new position in August.

Captain Stahre-Janson has been an officer on Royal Caribbean’s ships since 1997. Prior to joining Royal Caribbean, Captain Stahre-Janson worked for nine years in cargo shipping, primarily on petroleum and chemical tankers."

As you can see she worked her way up.

You need a captains liscence and a whole lot more.

Captain

The captain is the highest ranking on the cruise ship, responsible for operation of the vessel, navigation and the crew. Must have a good knowledge of international maritime laws and company policies.

Previous experience of at least 5 years in a subordinate position is always required, as well as a degree from an accredited maritime educational institution. Salaries range from $6000 to $10000 per month.

Tivogal
yes , of course.
(laughing) They spend years before they can command their own.

I think there is a test -- you have to be able to steer the ship without spilling your drink and then look over the side and be able to tell which ocean your ship is in. This has been known to come in handy when navigating.

kimmer727
No - just go ahead and send your application in. Then please let us know what ship you will be Captain on - so I won't book that for my next cruise.

You would need a Master's license, and be licensed by the Cost Guaed.

Check this website. It is issued by the Strate of Michigan. but remember, Michigan is on the Great Lakes.

tabulator32
You just need a fancy hat and a parrot.

Smeather
lol you'll never be a captain.

Captain is the traditional customary title for and form of address given to the person in charge of a vessel at sea regardless of military rank. On most legal documents in the merchant shipping industry, he or she is correctly referred to as the ship's Master. A nautical "Captain" may be a civilian or a naval commissioned officer of any rank.

You would need a captain's license to start with....

A driver's license isn't enough to become a cruise ship captain. I'm sure that you would have to go through extensive training and get some other type of license to drive a cruise ship

100 percent of cruise ship captains were former naval captains in whatever country they lived in, just as most airline pilots were former air force pilots.

So if you want to be a cruise ship captain some day, join the Navy.
