Well, believe it or not, crossing the Atlantic on cruise/ocean liners is becoming increasingly popular again.

You have several options depending on your departure and arrival port preferences. If you don't mind leaving out of Southampton, and would prefer to arrive in New York, Cunard Line's Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth 2 are the standard bearers. They can, however, be rather expensive and are known for not being traditionally child friendly (though the QM2 is supposed to be better than the QE2 for that).

Princess also has cruises from Southampton to New York (Brooklyn to be precise) which depart at specific times of the year (check with a travel agent for more).

Crystal and Celebrity have scheduled departures from Dover to Manhattan and Bayonne, NJ aboard the Symphony and Constellation respectively.

You tend to have a lot of cruises around spring from Fort Lauderdale to Europe and in late summer from Europe to Fort Lauderdale/Miami (repositioning cruises).

Your best bet is to check with a cruise discounter, tell them your situation and see what they can do.

Cunard has the QE2 and QM2 that both do trans-atlantic crossings, but depends on when you want to go. Right now both ships are beginning their world cruises. Their first westbound trans-atlantic crossings this year will be on April 24 from Southampton to NYC. For a full schedule see www.cunard.com.

Some additional lines may sail to the US when they reposition their ships from Europe to US or Caribbean in the Fall each year.

Have a great trip home!
