Ships Ahoy
|
There are a few things to consider when applying for certain cruiselines. If you don't have any experience onboard, then you don't have a chance with the luxury lines like Regent, Oceania, Cunard, Seaborn, Windstar etc. These are the best as you get paid vacations, short contracts, great cabins, better money and world wide destinations. This is something to work towards after you have been on ships for a few years.
This leaves you with some of the regular cruiselines. I have worked on ships for 6 years for both Carnival and Oceania and have friends spread across many lines. Here are some advantages of each.
- Princess is your best bet as they have the best range of destinations and very nice ships.
- Carnival work you pretty hard but through good crew parties and the money is good.
- RCCL is very similar to Carnival and the pay is almost the same.
- NCL is a rung below Carnival and Royal and have bad reviews from friends working there.
- Holland America has great destinations but has an older clientele and is a more subdued experience.
- Disney has horrible ports and lots of kids but some departments pay really well. Only worth it if you love everything Disney and kids.
Good luck with the job hunting. |

Are you sure? Really think about this before u make the decision. First of all you wind up sharing a cabin the size of a walk in closet with 3 other people you don't know. Have you ever seen the crew quarters of a ship? Kind of reminds me of a prison that they show on the TLC channel.
Ok the only line that is American Flagged is NCLAmerica. And believe me the conditions for Americans to work on it wasn't as cracked up to be.... First revenue sailing a good percentage of the crew walked off the ship. But to be American flagged they have to have US Citizen working on the ship. Sooooo let's see, most Americans don't want to work in these conditions so the element of folks that they hired felt as if it were a prison.
The rest of the cruise lines are foreign and there.... gosh working for pennies, no overtime... not cracked up to be.
The industry itself from the passenger point of view is great, but I think you should get a job at a Cruises headquarters. A lot of positions give oppty to travel on business on ship, and you will be in a regular passenger cabin eating normal good food. |

If you can, work for the Celebrity Crusies devision of Royal Carribean. Also, try to get a job on the ship Constellation (celebirty's flagship). |

If you are from the Philippines and want some experience first, try StarCruises (based in Singapore).
After gaining some experience, then you may want to consider jumping ship (not literally though). |

I have been on several cruises and will try to keep this as simple and short as possible
your main choices are
Carnival - a funship, very young college age crowd, very loud wild and the food and service might be a 3 out of 5
Disney - more family oriented, similar to disney world, great for kids, great programs for kids, not a lot of drinkers running around as on carnival, food and service 3 out of 5
Royal Caribbean- amazing ship for the price, all ages, not a lot of drinking college students more of an up class crowd, great shows, lots of fun. food and service 5 out of 5. The food here is excellent and the service is unbeatable
Princess- an older crowd retiredment age
Norwiegion same thing
Few notes Carnival has been compared to a walmart compared to a Macy's of Royal Carribean or a denny's for Carnival and a Nice steak house for Royal Caribbean.
The best place to find your answer and ask questions you might have is cruisecritic.com sign up for the board and enjoy you will find anything you want to know at that site. |
