I have cruised in August and it tends to be a slower time for a lot of the Caribbean ports. A lot of people want to escape the cold for the beach, not leave hot temperatures for hotter temperatures. It can be a bit balmy in August in the Caribbean, most of the time you're taking a dip at the beach or pool or sipping a cool drink so don't let that distract you. Despite it being slow, prices tend to be a little higher than say October or April because kids are out of school and families are taking vacations.
That being said, you can book a cruise yourself if you want. It is very easy to go on to expedia, orbitz or another travel website to book. I like sidestep because it aggregates a number of travel sites to find the lowest prices. At any of the sites, you select your itinerary and cabin right there. If you like, you can usually select to have the cruiseline arrange a flight to port for you. Of course, their prices are a little higher than what you would pay if you booked yourself but the advantage is that if they book your flights and there is a cancellation/delay, they will arrange for your to make it to the ship or hold it. If it seems like too much of a hassle, a travel agent would be a good resource to getting you set up.
I was not sure when you asked "who did you book with?", you were referring to the cruiseline or website/agent. I addressed the website part above. I always recommend Royal Caribbean. I have been on Carnival, Princess and RC and I keep going back to RC. Their ships are the most state of the art and are very large. Their service has always been impeccable. They have a large selection of itineraries. Whatever you decide, I would suggest reading a review of the itinerary and ship you are thinking about selecting on cruisecritic.com. There are several user submitted reviews on each ship. |

A travel agent is always best if you are not experienced in travel. After all the cruises we have been on we book on line, but you need to know how to get discounts. N.C.L. has some very nice places to visit (as do all cruise lines). Get a balcony room, as the sites are great. Enjoy and have a cocktail for me! |

I have. I went on the Carnival Glory in August.
I found the best price with vacationstogo.com. However in the past I've booked with AAA or booked on the cruiselines website. It's not like the airlines where the website is the most expensive. Cruiselines keep changing their rates and always keep some of the best rates on their website.
However for my personal taste, August was too hot. July was great and September was perfect but August was a bit too hot to lay out. I wasn't sure if you meant who did you book with as in what cruise line or what company made the reservations. |
