If I agree to pay tips at the recommended daily rate, what other tips, if any, do I need to consider on board? |
I am talking about my first cruise which I am shortly to embark upon. Do I, for example, need to tip the person who takes my hand luggage to my cabin when we embark? |

You will tip $1 a bag if you want to check your bag in. That is not done by the cruise line but terminal workers. Even you you bring the bags directly to their cart they expect a tip. There is no tipping the person who brings the bag to your room. They are the room porters. The only way not to pay a tip is to bring your bags aboard yourself.
There is a 15% tip added to all bar drinks but it will be added to your account. You may want to tip casino workers as in a hotel casino.
I have heard of people tipping the childcare counselors but it is not expected.
If you go on an excursion you are expected to tip the guide. If you take one of the "free" shuttles to various stores you are expected to tip the driver.
A note about the automatic tips if your cruise line uses it. They are shared. If you give additional tips to staff they may keep it themselves but if you cancel the automatic tip then they must share it.

When you get out of your car or off the bus, someone will stack your luggage on a cart and haul it off. You generally tip that person and the standard rate is about $1 a bag. Same thing when you leave.
All other tips are added to your bill at the end of the cruise. You will be asked to seperately tip the maitre'd of whatever dining room you use on the last night. |

In addition to the other info about tips, you should note if you are sailing Carnival, they add the recommended tips to your on-board account the moment you board the ship.
If you are sailing Carnival and prefer to tip in cash or in person, visit the purser's office and have the gratuities removed from your on-board account. If your sailing Royal Caribbean, they allow you to charge your tips but don't allow you to adjust the amount down for poor service.
Other folks that work for tips...shore excursions personnel, shuttle drivers, taxi drivers, luggage porters in cruise terminal for embarkation as well as debarkation.
$1 per bag for the luggage porters is the going rate. |

I just came off a ship myself. In addition to everything else these people have mentioned...you have to tip in the specialty restauraunts. The main dining rooms the tip is already included in the daily tip, but let's say you want to go eat at a steakhouse or a sushi bar. There is usually a cover charge and tip is not included. |

I've been on both, 2 cruises that automaticly deduct tips and 10 cruises that you decide on tipping. I will never go on the auto deduct cruise again. the service was poor. the crew all stood around high fiving each other and the passengers could pound salt.
The other cruises (I've been on 12 total) where you decide on tipping were 99% perfect. Good service wonderful smiles and I gave good tips. They earned them. On the ten good cruises I only with held two tips because of bad service. On these cruises I get envelopes that are left in the room and hand out the tips and shake there hand and thank them. Everyone knows who is tiped and who isn't. |

If you are in a suite or a stateroom with butler or concierge service, it would be nice if you would tip them at the end of the week.
Also, if you ate at upscale restaurants, please don't forget to tip the Maitre'd as well.
If you used any special services like the spa, include them too. |

when you join the ship if you go to the purser and tell him you want to tip yourself they will give you envelopes then you can choose who you tip. have been on several cruises and only got told about this in the last 3 years. |
