"People, People... be calm! everything is under control. The reason for the rough ride is cuz the guy at the helm has Gas. Everything is under control. I the Captain will be inspecting the equipment on the boat, so this guy is in charge until I return. Please make your way to the balcony in 10 minutes for a great speech by the 2nd in command."

- During this 10 minutes... I the captain, wuld be GONE! Resuce boat loaded and on my way to the nearest island or whereever. 4get that rule "the Captain goes down with the ship" .. And i didnt leave the people to die... the 2nd in command will be briefed and can inform everyone about the danger at his meeting after those 10 minutes.

The captain would board the bridge of the vessel, in the center control panel by the navigation equipment is a switch and microphone dedicated for abandoning the vessel, international policies called SOLAS state that you must sound 5 blasts and one long blast.

Mary L
I believe that those sorts of emergencies are well-rehearsed by the ships' officers and handled according to SOLAS procedures.

You would start with 7 blasts on the horn.

I am guessing you have never even been on a ship.. not even a cruise ship.. because if you had, the you would know about the LIFEBOAT DRILLS that are REQUIRED by International Law and ALL PASSENGERS have to go through them

During the drills, the passengers are given instructions about what to do in the event of an emergency.

In the event of an "Abandon Ship" emergency, the whole thing would be done to keep fear and panic at a minimum.

Your above sentence would work.. but it would be hard to hear with all the sirens and horns going off.

Modern ships have so much positive flotation built into them, there is almost always a matter of HOURS to evacuate the ship.. provided the ship is in open water...

When the Harold of Free Enterprise when over, it was in very shallow water and it rolled on it's side before anyone knew what was happening. If it had been in open water, there would have been time to get the bow doors closed and the pumps would have taken care of the water.
