Im terified of encounting 35 foot waves on my cruise?

Hi im going on a norwegian fjords cruise in july 2009.but im terrified the north sea has a very bad reputation of heavy seas and im terrified that what is meant to be a holiday for me turns into a nightmare, im very apprehensive person and i always imagine the worst like the ship sinking whiles i sleep or the ship capsizing in heavy seas so what i need is some one to give me positive reassurance, how much pounding can a cruise ship take to sink her

A cruise ship will not go where there is danger, weather it is from high seas, hurricanes or Pirates about. THey put safety of all passengers first. The ships have stabilizers which keep it nice and steady. The fact is the only ship that has sunk since the titanic were one of those very small Italian ones and everybody was kept safe on that one. Remember, a cruise company needs to make money. If they were not completely safe, that company would be out of business.

cruise crew are well aware of bad weather conditions and will take a different route to avoid such as you fear.
besides, think on this...we all have one date only to be born and one on which we die and there's no stopping either. So, if you were to die with a large wave, which is highly unlikely, if you didn't go on the cruise but it was your date for dying, you'd have a heart attack or something at home.. So relax and have a fab time, knowing that the ship's crew are looking after their own safety as well as yours.

Hi
I am sure The Norwegian has gone threw the North Sea before. So relax and enjoy yourself.

your fear is pointless
even if something does happen to the ship, they are so big and would take a REALLY long time to sink and you would have time to get off and away from it
it wont sink in a second

UK reply.

We have done a Southampton to Norwegian fjords cruise on P+O Oriana (about 1700 guests). In July the North Sea will not be bad, it will probably be like a millpond. Even quite a swell is not felt on mid/large cruise ships which all have stabilisers.

Once you are in the fjords it is like a river cruise as they are protected from any sea swell!

I have been on a small cruise ship (100 persons) coming back from South Georgia in the South Atlantic when we experienced force 11 gales for 3 days! The ship was going up and down 60ft and rolling 20 degrees either side of the centre line. It was uncomfortable but in no way dangerous. We knew of course before going that we might hit bad weather in the Antarctic area.

The best place in a storm is low down in the middle of the ship during the day as you get less movement there.

Also been in a force 9 gale in a Holyhead/Dublin ferry. They are not as well designed as a cruise ship for bad weather. That was very rolly polly!

Cruise ships are designed to handle extremes as they can travel all over the world and have to go through some very bad weathers!

Don't worry you will have a great time!

Don't worry about the weather think more about splashing out for a balcony cabin and enjoy sitting out there watching the world go by! On your cruise you will see the N. Sea oil rigs as you go by.

you dont hit many waves in the ocean. we hit a storm in june and we didnt get very high waves at all

I work for a cruise line and can assure you that the weather is monitored continually, the Captain always thinks as his 1st priority the safety and comfort of his passengers, so will avoid all rough weather/storms if it is possible.
So just go and enjoy it as worring about something that might never happen is going to spoil your whole time.

You will not have to worry about high seas if you are doing a Fjords cruise. By their very nature fjords are not like open seas where winds and the actions of waves can create high seas. When you cruise fjords you will essentially be cruising around and through mountain peaks much like cruising down/up a river. There will be land on both sides of the ship close by most of the time and thus not much room for much action by the ocean to create high seas. I have cruised some of the Fjords in Norway and also in Chile and the inside passage of Alaska which is about the same. Those are really the smoothest cruises that you can take.

I just got back from a cruise to Hawaii in open seas and for a couple of days on our journey back we had high winds at about 45 mph and also high seas at 25 to 30 feet. Yes the ship rocked a bit but very few people got sea sick because the ship has stabilizers to prevent rocking. On a fjords cruise you will not encounter those type seas.
