In an oceanview cabin on a cruise can you open the window?

I'm booking a cruise. Choosing between a balcony and oceanview. Can you open the window in an oceanview cabin?

No, ocean view windows do not open.

Here is a picture of the Freedom of the Seas ...

You will note that above the life boats (a good fifty feet above the water line) are the balcony cabins (cabins with doors that open to the ocean). Below the lifeboats are ocean view cabins. Also the forward facing cabins are ocean view cabins.

The ocean view cabins on the side of the ship are too close to the water. Even a small wave could come into the cabin if the window was open.

The forward facing cabins have to take waves large enough to go over the bow. Again, too much danger of the water coming into the cabin if the window was open.

The reason ocean view windows do no open is to prevent water from coming into the cabin.

This is a picture of an ocean view cabin on the Monarch of the Seas.

It is hard to see, but at about 4:30 and 7:30 there are clamps. Inside the closet is a metal piece that fits over the window. It can be put on over the window if needed (for example, if the windows breaks).

The is no such thing as an opening window on any modern cruise ship particularly on the hull. Ocean view cabins can have portholes, (lower decks), square windows, (mid decks) and floor to ceiling window (higher decks). The windows are integral part of the hull watertight integrity and are not designed to open.
There are doors on balcony cabins which allow access to the balcony but these are all above the promenade deck.

Sorry, no!!

The answer is NO. The windows in an oceanview cabin - regardless of what cruise line - cannot be opened.

Spend a few extra dollars and go for the balcony cabin. The floor to ceiling windows let in more light than just the windows in an oceanview - and sitting on the balcony at night is wonderful.

If you want to feel the breeze choose an balcony cabin. They arent that expensive on modern mega ships since there is so many of them. That give you the op to be outside whenever it fits you. I havent been on any ship where the window can open so I dont think its the case. Also remember that most cabin are non smoking theese day if that is what you want the window for. I would choise the balcony if you can afford it especially if the cruise is an warm water one such as the carrebian or mediterrenian sea. Johan.

No, you cannot open the port window.

Get the balcony. You won't regret it!
Sure, it is more money, but it is worth it.

:-)

Get the balcony. The balcony and oceanview cabins have the same furniture and interior. The oceanview just has a window that you could look outside at. True to its name, the balcony stateroom has a balcony where you could go outside your cabin, look at the sights, and feel the wind. It costs more, but not by much, probably $50-300 more.

I went on a cruise with some friends on a Carnival fun ship (Imagination) and we had a oceanview cabin. No, we couldn't open the window but at least we could tell whether it was night or day. Have a safe trip!
