Western Caribbean for one simple fact: you will actually have time to enjoy your vacation and relax. The Eastern Caribbean is gorgeous, but you are basically porting into an island every day which makes for a hectic schedule, as well as more costs in shore excursions and shopping. The western route has wonderful ports such as Cozumel and Grand Cayman, but it also allows you time on the boat to relax and enjoy the offerrings there. I left my Western Caribbean cruise refreshed and with extra money. The Eastern Caribbean can leave you exhausted, broke, and disappointed that you missed an island. If you want to do as much as possible on the islands and run at a hectic pace, eastern is for you.

I would definitely choose the Western Caribbean cruises because a cruise like that offers you the opportunity to see Cozumel or Playa del Carmen, Jamaica, Belize or Costa Rica and the shore excursion options are more varied. And you can go snorkeling or SCUBA diving in unforgettable locations.

I have been to both sides of the Caribbean and both itineraries are wonderful. However, I did prefer the Eastern Caribbean for one reason. The island of Jamaica, the people there are not very nice at all. In fact, they are down right nasty and rude to Americans. I had one experience when some very pushy t shirt salesman grabbed my arm so hard it was very painful. He wanted me to look at this collection of t-shirts which I told him 4 times I was not at all interested. I was more concerned with finding myself a bathroom to use at the time LOL. Anyway, the island itself is very beautiful and worth seeing if you are into photography. I shot 4 rolls of film on that day alone. Just stay away from the island natives if you want my opinion. They will harrass you at every opportunity they can get and never back off. The Eastern Caribbean is the exact opposite. St Maarten is one of the better islands as well as Barbados.

Enjoy your trip whichever intinerary you choose.

Eastern Caribbean, so you can visit St. Maarten, good luck!

It just depends what ports interest you most. I think Western Caribbean tends to be more popular. But both are nice.

St Thomas and St Croix are the best as far as I'm concerned.

For a first time cruise, best to go with the Western Caribbean. It allows you more time to relax and enjoy. Take it also if you are interested in seeing more sights, such as Maya ruins, etc.

The Eastern Caribbean cruise is also good, but tends to leave you pretty winded. If you enjoy shopping, though, you should take this one.

western, the destinations at the eastern caribbean seem the same, there's not really a huge difference, since some islands in the eastern caribbean are "owned" by the U.S.,
you can visit jamaica, mexico, grand cayman, etc. in the western caribbean

It depends on what you like to do. I have been to the Western, Eastern and Southern Caribbean. I like the Western Caribbean because of the Mayan ruins. There are so many to see, Cozumel, Belize, Costa Maya, just to name a few.

I like the Virgin Islands in the Eastern Caribbean. St. Johns and St Thomas have lovely beaches and good snorkeling and scuba diving. I like to shop for silver jewely in St. Thomas.

The Southern Caribbean includes St. Lucia and Barbados, Aruba and Curaco. They are lovely and also have good snorkeling.

I didn't think much of the Bahams.

It really depends actually(I am Owner of a Travel Agency). If you want the empahasis to be more on Mexico(which is where a Western Caribbean cruise visits), then a Western cruise is for you. If you want the true Caribbean experience, then an Eastern cruise would fit the bill.

Cost would be a consideration as well since depending on when you want to go, where you want to go, and for how long will be a factor. If you could kindly either call, email me at: indysteve1563@yahoo.com, or reach me through Yahoo Messenger with your specifics, we can see which cruise makes the most sense for you and is compatible with your timetable and pocketbook.
