Confused

Is $400 enough to take on a all inclusive Norwegian 7 day cruise?

I'm doing the eastern caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Dawn... I know everything i'm expected to pay for but im just curious do most people go over $400? Its just me and a friend going.. I don't drink much and i'm going to relax NOT to shop.

ALSO:I'm gonna use cash to pay for my on board expenses how much is the deposit? And, is it better to do the debit or credit thing? I dont wanna wait in line all day to top up my on board account with cash.

Thanks
xoxo

It's definitely around the budget for how much I spend on a 7 day.

You said you don't drink very much and if you avoid the casino and shopping, that does make the money stretch further.

Roughly for a 7 day if you drink 2 drinks a day that's bout $100 for drinks and it's roughly $80 for the automatic tips.

I put cash on my room key card on my first cruise. I put $250 on it and it didn't last any time. I didn't know the first thing they do is put the tips on there for the steward, waiter, etc. SO that was $80 off the top. If you drink soda that would have to factor in as well.

There isn't a deposit you have to put on it--you can't run over the amount you put on your card. The card just stops working and the waiter comes back and tells you that you are out of money and your card wouldn't go through.

Are you planning on doing any shore excursions? Each one of those is roughly $100 as well. If you wanted to do something grand like swimming with the dolphins, that might be $150.

For my husband and I we usually spend about $300 on alcohol and about $400 on shore excursion, plus the $150 on tips. So without counting any of the shopping we do it's $425 a person. So yeah, if you aren't a heavy drinker you can do it plus a couple shore excursions, though yes I'd say more people go over that. Between the spa, the art auction, the number of people I see in bingo, the casino...not to mention from my experiences most people probably spend close to $400 on drinking alone.

$400 may be a bit to low. Expect to pay $70 just for the standard tipping. There will also be other tips you should pay such as room service, porters, tour guides etc. If you don't drink much or gamble then your main expenses will be on shore. Usually you can get better deals on your shore excursions if you use local vendors near the pier or if you reseach the ports prior to your cruise and line something up. If you are just doing the beach thing, then expect to pay a bit for taxi / bus rides to the beaches and then a few drinks at the beach and probably lunch for the day. On many of the ships, you can keep track of your spending via the TV in your cabin.

As mentioned - you do have to watch. They upsell and then upsell some more. Read about where you want to go before you get into the ports - so you can get the most out of your time and your money when in port. When on the ship - well of course there is food and drink available most times. They do charge however for bottled water in your room and in your rooms If you watch the daily Cruise news - they have fairly regular events where you get a discounted price on drinks for a themed evening - so you have to watch for that.
It will be the excursions that will tempt and cost you if you use the cruise line event people who are trained to upsell. So much to do and enjoy - just plan and you should make your dollars go far and have a great trip! Beautiful beaches everywhere - within walking distance of ship often. Free shuttles too - just need to be aware of the time so you don't miss out.

Do the debit credit card thing and watch your spending. $400.00 should do it, but always have a little back up just in case. Resist all the temptations of NCL, they will try to nickel and dime you. Also, there is a $12 service fee PER PERSON for like tips and stuff and it is a daily fee, so expect it on your bill...

Just got home from the Gem 2 weeks ago...

Wow let me see if I can help you A 7 day cruise on board spending you should take no less than $ 100.00 per day that"s $ 700.00 The deposit I am not sure you need to check with your booking officer do the debit thing but always be careful. I think you should take your own lite snacks in your purse if you can, chips M & M s etc. have a nice safe trip and tell your doctor about it or get something to keep you calm. remember me and send me a post card .XoXoXo

$400 is fine if you don't spend the money on anyone else. However, you don't get the option of paying cash as you go. It is charged to your key card that is issued to you and then you settle up at the end of the cruise.

As for which card to use, do NOT use your debit card. That is linked to your bank account and unless you want some stranger or group of strangers having access to your bank account and identity then use your regular credit card and pay it off when the bill comes. If you aren't spending too much money to begin with then it shouldn't be an issue for you.

However, please remember that NCL charges a $12 per person/per day fee for tips and gratuities that must be settled at the end of the cruise.

I do not know if you will be able to settle your account at the end with cash. They may have limited cash available to use for settling the accounts.

It will be much easier to use a debit or credit card instead of cash. Settling your bill with cash would be the only reason for waiting in line. If you use a card, you don't have to do anything except check over your bill which will arrive under your door during the night. I think you can easily get by with $400. as long as you don't shop or gamble. Those are the basic things you would use cash for.

Last I knew, the cash deposit was $400. per person.
