Is it a bad idea to bring a computer on a cruise?

I'm taking the carnival cruise to Cozumel, Mexico in a few days, and i was wondering if it would be a bad idea to bring my apple laptop, mainly to charge my iPod and camera. They didn't mention anything about it in the brochure, so is there anything i should know?

Nope, there's nothing wrong with bringing it if you want to charge anything. you're allowed to bring it, you're just risking it getting stolen, but it rarely ever happens. You just can't use the internet unless you pay for it with the ship, and it's really expensive.

Hope this helps!

I would leave it home. Don't you want to escape reality and be on vacation away from every day things? You will be so busy enjoying the cruise, the laptop will just sit there. On long cruises, like over 7 days, you may need it though. My self, I just used the ships computers to check e-mail and pay bills. I like to travel as light as possible now, especially with all the airline restrictions.

No problem. I just came back from a cruise on Carnival as well to Cozumel and Key West (it's a blast by the way). There's no reason you can't take your laptop. I took mine. They have wireless b ut you have to pay. You get around 100 minutes for 50 dollars so it's not cheap.

Unless you are doing extremely important work while on your cruise you should think about tleaving it behind, If you want to send or receive e mail most cruie ships have compters on board, so give you brain and your computer a rest and leave it at home, less stress if you don't have to think about whether or not you have mail. cruises are all about R&R

I have cruised many times and have always brought my laptop. Each time, I only use it like 1-2 times and end up using the computer 'lab' for all the guests in the main area since it's a bit cheaper. The connectivity isn't that great and plus you are so busy, you won't want to check email or surf the web! But... if you need it to charge your other tech stuff, I would do it! Just makes your suitcase a bit heavier!

I have brought my laptop on 4 cruises now just so I can charge batteries and also load my pictures in the hard drive so i dont have to worry about filling up the memory card.

it was no problem at all. Just always keep it packed in a computer bag and under your bed just in case the maid leaves the door open or something. Also when getting on the ship and going through security make sure the person you are travelling with goes through the metal detector and is waiting for it at the other end of the conveyor belt just in case. I have never felt uneasy about it once and it helps me save money and effor of bring other things in its place.

Dont think you'll be able to use WiFi though...they'll hit you at almost $10/minute

You risk having it stolen or lost, of course, and it's one more thing to lug onto the plane, but if you need it for something besides e-mail or Internet, then it's up to you. If you do want to keep in touch by e-mail or use the Internet, your cruise ports will have Internet cafes you can use - much cheaper than on board computer use.

If you really want to bring your laptop you can, but it will be a pain. I've never had problems with theft on a ship, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You're camera is a must, but I think you'll use your Ipod far less than what you think you would. Do you have an alternative way to charge your camera? If you have that option - that's what I would recommend. I tend to pack very light on a cruise, and I still never use half of what I bring. If you can do without it, don't bring it.

randall_nd
As long as you only use it to charge your iPod or save digital photos, I don't see a problem, however. It would be a bad idea to play video games in your room. You can do that at home. You don't to waste any of the cruise. All you want to do in your room is shower and sleep. Spend as much time as possible up on the Lido Deck.
Bon Voyage!!!
Oh!!! You HAVE to try the chocolate melting cake in the dining room in the evenings!!! It's totally awesome.

Brittany, I recommend that you get a memory card or two for your camera and leave your lap top at home. The cards hold a large amount of pictures and are not liable to be stolen. Cruise ships have safes in the cabins but they will not hold a lap top. You will not want to pay for the internet connection fees, either, should you be temped to email someone the pictures.

Regards,
Dan

most likely, because sometimes you'll put something down and it will disappear in the next second, and there's even pools on cruises so i dont think you should...<:/

I don't see a big problem with it aside from the fact that it is an expensive item you will have to keep track of. And you run the risk of having it stolen (especially on cruises things like that happen all the time) And if you are planning on getting on the internet that's not gunna happen.
