Is it better to book two separate cabins on a cruise for a family of 4 w/ 2 teenage kids 19 and 16?

YES! YES! YES!
If you can afford it...go for it and enjoy!
There is so much to do for kids of all ages...your kids will want to be out late, having fun, sleep in and have some freedom! And as parents you might want some alone time too! the rooms are for sleeping and relaxing...you might not be in them all the time...but if you are all getting ready at once it can be tight...but if you have kids who want to be social and make friends easily...then they will probably be out and about having a blast! And not want to wake you up or run on your "clock" time....we didn't see my brother who was 20 at the time, except when we all had mandatory dinner time together as a family...:)
don't forget the sun block and bottle water in your bag! :)

Yes, if you can afford it.

The cabins are small and the bathrooms are tiny.

Booking the second cabin will give you an extra bathroom and extra closet space.

The cruise line may give you some line about one guest needs to be at least 25 to stay in a room. Have them book one parent into each room and change keys at the pursers desk after you board.

The teens will want to run on their own schedule and the small room means someone is always getting woke up when the other guests are coming and going and there is never enough room to get ready.

If you want a balcony, book the kids room directly across from your cabin. Or request inside cabins next door to each other. The adjoining cabins are not that great. If you need in the kids room, you can call the cabin steward and he will let you in.

Also, I recommend getting a set of the 2-way radios to keep in contact on the ship. These were invaluable in keeping up with my pre- and teen on our Spring Break cruise.

YES!!!!

I wouldn't recommend going if you plan on all 4 sharing 1 room.

The cabins are small so it if you can afford to get two cabins than do so!

Cabins on ships average only about 170 square feet. This is not very big.

It would be good to get two cabins. The kids could have an inside and the parents a balcony cabin. Everyone would be happy.

Those rooms are crowded enough will three people including one teenager.. I would deffinately say that would be wise. Book one parent in each room and then exchange keys at the guest relations deck so the kids can be in their own room and book them an inside to save some money and you an oceanview or balcony. It will give you an extra bathroom and closet space and it wont be as cramped and you get more space and don't feel crowded. Since the kids are going to out at late hours of the night that would be very wise and have curfews for the 16 year old if your taking them with you on the excursions for the port your at if not let them stay out but its your call your the parent but you want to see you kids sometimes except for dinner..

Yes, unless you can get a large suite. Always go on-line first and go to the website that has a reproduction of the cabins. Check the sizes. Make sure that you have the children opposite your cabin. Since they are teenagers they will probably keep different disco hours. You would probably prefer the jazz clubs and the live entertainment. The biggest cruise liners have main ballroom, bingo halls, live entertainment at the: pool deck, terrace lounge, admiral's lounge, etc etc. Then there is always the disco or three.

Yes if you can afford it. You can get rooms that join together and then you can be together still, but with seperate rooms.

By all means. It will cost you extra, but it beats the discomfort of four people sleeping, showering and getting on each others nerves that being confined to a small area is conducive to.

However, if you can afford a suite that would provide everyone with adequate space and some nice amenities.

Depending on the cruise ship/line, a suite may be sufficient enough. Several ships have "Family Suites" that have a separate bedroom area for Mom & Dad, and another for the kids. Royal Carribean and NCL are big on the family size suites. You may also be able to find connecting rooms one with a balcony for you and the connecting with just a window, which cuts down the cost a little bit.
