Is it dangerous to cruise in the Caribean over the next 2 months? Are there too many hurricanes?

NO!, its not dangerous to cruise in the Caribbean during hurricane season because the cruise lines have the equipment to make sure that they know where hurricane's are, AND they have plan for staying away from the hurricanes. If the hurricane is at/near the departure port on the day the cruise will depart they will typically wait a day or two to depart. If the ship is at sea they will alter the cruise route to stay away from the storm; typically changing the order of the port stops and/or substituting different ports. I went on a cruise once where the order of our port stops were changed due to a hurricane; but we had smooth sailing every day safely far away from it.

The official hurricane season is June through the end of October, not just the next two months. So if you are planning a cruise, or have one booked then you should for sure get travel insurance. You can do that through the cruise line or use others not affiliated with the cruise lines, like Travelex:

Or, you can compare rates at this site: http://www.insuremytrip.com/p/myquotecalc?pid=1000&spid=0&linkid=13521&rid=43&DM=05&DD=01&DY=2006&RM=05&RD=20&RY=2006&agentcommission=&agentcommissioncalc=&predestination=8&triptype=Cruise&AGET1=62&AGET2=60&AGET3=&AGET4=&AGET5=&AGET6=&AGET7=&AGET8=&AGET9=&AGET10=&VIEWAGET1=62&VIEWAGET2=60&VIEWAGET3=&VIEWAGET4=&VIEWAGET5=&VIEWAGET6=&VIEWAGET7=&VIEWAGET8=&VIEWAGET9=&VIEWAGET10=&usedob=&T1DOBMONTH=&T1DOBDAY=&T1DOBYEAR=&T2DOBMONTH=&T2DOBDAY=&T2DOBYEAR=&T3DOBMONTH=&T3DOBDAY=&T3DOBYEAR=&T4DOBMONTH=&T4DOBDAY=&T4DOBYEAR=&T5DOBMONTH=&T5DOBDAY=&T5DOBYEAR=&T6DOBMONTH=&T6DOBDAY=&T6DOBYEAR=&T7DOBMONTH=&T7DOBDAY=&T7DOBYEAR=&T8DOBMONTH=&T8DOBDAY=&T8DOBYEAR=&T9DOBMONTH=&T9DOBDAY=&T9DOBYEAR=&T10DOBMONTH=&T10DOBDAY=&T10DOBYEAR=&TCI=3500&TCIT=7000&BI=&TAI=50000&Residence=NC&Feature=&product=&x=25&y=17&o=200601196027342&pid=1000&linkid=13521&rid=43&Run=QuickQuote&compare=false&printerfriendly=&printplan=

There is no way to know precisely how many hurricanes there will be any given season. But since its only July 8 and we have a major storm already there are likely to be quite a few this year.

My wife and I spent our 25th anniversary on a Carnival ship in the Carribean. unfortunately, Hurrican Ophelia chose that time to head into our path. But the captain knew his business, he skirted the edge of the storm. It was a little rocky for a day or so, but we made our first port of call, San Juan Puerto Rico on schedule.

Professional seamen know how to stay out of harms way, and the carribean is a wonderful romantic place to visit. And the shipboard activities (not to mention the copious, diverse, and delicious food) make a cruise a cost effective way to vacation. They really take good care of you.

If your worried about it, get travel insurance, but don't miss the chance to cruise.

Most like on the months of August and October, hurricanes will hit the Caribbean.. Not the best time of the year to go on a cruise..

As long as you have a flexible schedule, Hurricane season is the best time to take a caribbean cruise. If the hurricane is hitting the port you are leaving from, your cruise may be a day or two late leaving. If you are at sea and it hits your port you may get to stay out an extra day. My mother-in-law was leaving galveston, tx for a western caribbean and a hurricane came thru so Carnival changed it to an eastern caribbean at no extra charge and everybody had a wonderful time. Also if you will notice, prices are a little bit cheaper this time of year. Don't forget to take out the travel insurance, it doesn't cost that much and is well worth it if you need it. I had a hospital bill at sea for $995 and the insurance paid 100% it also pays for medical evac, etc Check out www.itravelinsured.com for additional details on whats covered.

I think the worst months to travel in the Caribbean are September- November.

MomSezNo
It IS hurricane season, but the cruise ships have sophisticated weather equipment and information and are well-able to avoid storms. They're not going to risk their ships, not to mention passengers. You may miss ports because of the storms, so it's a good idea to have some concept of what things you might want to do in case you go to an unexpected port.

You might even get free cruise days. It happened to us while we waited for a hurricane to pass - we wouldn't even have known there was a hurricane in the area if the captain hadn't told us. It did get a bit rough when we finally headed into Ft. Lauderdale, but you just take your benadryl and relax.

It will be hurricane season, but i think you should go. The Caribbean is wonderful. Keep your eyes open for a chance to stay in the Islands. I got a job and stayed 8 months. I did get to live thru a hurricane on Eleuthra.

October and November are the main hurricane months
