Ooh those answers are soooo wrong. We went on a cruise in October from UK. We found many people 'employed' on the ship for services/work. These mainly were: Dance Hosts, Dance Teachers, Handicraft Teachers, Bridge Teachers and Lecturers etc. That type of thing, if you can teach a handicraft, or dance or give an interesting talk you will get free accommodation with your partner/spouse. You will not get paid but the hours needed would only be say a couple a day.

No, this quick fill in would cause security issues and a paper-work nightmare. Hey, I know its far out but why not get a job, then actually pay for the cruise!

Short answer - No.
Unions, Experience, Insurance, Health check,Criminal check are just the obvious problems!

No no no no no no no no a thousand times no!

New employees must go through a lot of training, you have to have a pre-employment medical. You'd spend the entire week in training, and a cruise line is NOT going to waste it's time on someone who is just going to be onboard for a week or two.

they'd just sue you for breech of contract

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
NO!! No, no !!!

Working on a cruise ship is no vacation, its hard work with long days for an extended period. Normally persons who sign on to work on a cruise ship will sign a contract to work for 6 to 10 months continuously, depending on the position and cruise line. Then after that time you would get a month to 6 weeks off. Then you come back on ship for another long stint. The daily work schedules are not 8 hour days but more like 12 to 14 hour days with split shifts. Depending on your job you may go to work at 6:00 Am, work until about noon, have several hours off in the afternoon, and then go back to work at 4:00 Pm and be on duty until 10 PM.

Cruise ship are used 24 hr a day 7 days a week and there is no downtime between cruises except to clean the ship and prepare for the next group of passengers to board. The ship will be in the departure port about 12 hour to discharge passengers, then load new supplies and passengers and then set sail again.

When you are a crew member your quarters and recreation facilities are separate from the passengers and while you can interact with them some in an official capacity you will not be free to just go join in with what they are doing (mainly because you will be busy working). The crew has its own cafeteria, gym, pool, hot tub, recreation room, lounge and other areas just for them.

When the ship docks in scheduled ports and at the departure port you may or may not be able to get off the ship, depending on your job and work schedule. But crew members do occasionally get to take a few hours off in port stops and shop, go to the beach or do whatever. Its just that they do not have a firm regular schedule.
