My first cruise was to the Eastern Caribbean. Since then, I have also gone to the Western Caribbean. To me both are equally great. I really liked snorkeling at St Johns bay which we took a tour to. but to be perfectly honest, I had a great times on all of the islands. No matter what you choose, the Caribbean is always a great place for your first cruise. You can't go wrong. |

Having been to both several times, my experience is that for many younger people, water sports, sunbathing, and bellying up to an open-air bar/cafe can be found anywhere. Key West is esp. good for the bar/music scene. As for shopping for bargains and high-end stuff: St. Thomas and St. Maarten are great for jewelry, stereo equipment, cameras, hand-embroidered items. Smaller ports focus on hand-made Island goods, open-air markets. Take at least one cab driver up on an island tour. If you go to Ocho Rios, definitely plan to do the waterfalls. Take reef-walkers.
Other than this, the best entertainment and fun is provided by the cruising experience. Duty-free shopping is available except when in port. Games, dancing, silly competitions, lounge acts, all are great. |

For the first timer, I suggest the western Carribean. I've been on Western, Eastern, and Southern. The islands make a great "calming block" (for the lack of a scientific term) and the waters then in the western seas tend to be less rough. If it's your first time on the ocean seas, why not make sure you don't get queezy? Try the Western First is my thought! |
