Is this normal for cruise ship waiters? |
I recently went on a 7 day cruise. My waiters were extremely nice to the point where it made me uncomfortable. They greeted me every time and gave me excessive compliments. One of them started conversations and would ask me very personal questions. He would insist bringing me extra drinks and dessert even when I said i didn't need any.
I know that excellent service is expected on cruise ship, but I felt like they invaded upon my space a bit much. Do waiters go out of their way to do this for tips, or something else? |

I went on a cruise and the servers were very nice all the time. Dont know, yours sounds a little bit too nice..especially if the questions were way too personal.. As far as tips, my friends and I just gave the appropriate tip, so for someone to go over board on compliments, etc, maybe he was fishing for extra tips. I would think they would only rely on the usual tips. Just hope you had a good time. |

People are not used to respect and being a gentleman here in the states! LOL. I think it is just because it is their culture and their job to go over the top in making you feel like royalty. My bf and I felt so important every night at dinner on our cruise that when we came home and went to eat at restaurants we were very sad that the waiters did not know us by first name and they seemed rude compared to the ones on the cruise! You did not specify in how they made you feel uncomfortable but I wouldn't look too far into it. Usually they go over the top to make a living, cruises are known for "treating you like royalty." Hope I helped. |

The cruise line we went on prided itself on 'your waiter knows your name and the barman knows your drink'. We found the bar staff called us by our first names inserting a Sir and Lady in front. Very amusing. I did find, however, that our waiter, although very attentive, seemed over familiar with the use of our first names. He also always asked what was wrong with the meal if we left anything. I stopped this by saying to him 'if I don't eat it all you won't tell me off will you?' His reply ws that if there was something wrong he wanted to tell the Chef. We are oldies so I suppose we are more unfamiliar with this. I think they are all very clever that they remember your names and next week they have a whole new set to remember. |

For the most part, yes I think that is the norm for the wait staff. Ours were extremely friendly and courteous. You have to think about the culture of these people. Most are from poor countries, so this is their only source of income for themselves and their entire families. They are trying their best to do an outstanding job and cannot afford any less. Many of their cultures also find it appropriate to "try to get to know you" as a sign of respect almost.
Now, if the personal questions were extremely inappropriate...then yes, that is too much. ...for the most part, I suspect they were just doing their jobs and trying to please you. |

I been a waiter for Royal Caribbean for 2 years and I can tell you that nobody from the Ship will risk on loosing their job for a girl.
They are a lot out there and they come every week.In the same time you have to understand that not everyone out there are from US and they have different approach.I got in trouble for kissing a lady's hand.
How stupid is that? But in europe is a big respect...
Be happy that you got the attention which you will not going to get at home.People on the cruise are very respectfully. |
