Jumping overboard?

Why all of a sudden after years of cruise lines are we hearing of people missing or jumping overboard. Back when Love Boat was on TV, you never heard of anything like this, or maybe I am more aware of it now that I am older.

Noble Angel
in the end the jumpers where either found to be very drunk before they went missing, sunk alcohol on, or (the ones rescued) admitted to stupidity.

the rail on the ship are 4 ft high, you would have to make an effort to go over them.

It's a media thing.

After a few high profile cases come to light all incidences are going to be reported. Honestly, it has nothing to do with "more" occurrences of people jumping or falling....it's actually pretty steady. The only difference is with the global media phenomenon it's being reported more often.

To put it into a bigger and simpler frame, there really isn't more violence in the world. It's that the media is able to report more of it to you. We have so much access via the Global Cable Networks, bringing the Middle-East into our living rooms it truly has created an interest in the entire world among those of us who had isolated ourselves for too long....i.e. Americans.

Sorry, for the soap box...but the Love Boat reference got me going! I probably would have pushed Charo and The Landers Twins right off the Lido Deck.

Sane
Its the number of freaks they let on board who cannot control themselves and get drunk thinking its cool and jump off in their stupor.

Maybe they've made oceans more tempting to jump into.

Southern Apostolic
The mojority of them involve alcohol, usually smuggled on, and not bought at the bars.

The media has found something of interest, and feel the need to make a huge thing out of it. Also, more and more people are taking cruises - and more people cruising leads to more accidents. As stated earlier, most people fall off because of alcohol (usually climbing up and leaning over to throw up), or occassionally they are suicidal. Rarely ever does a person just "fall" overboard. I only remember reading one case like this, where there was a huge storm and the ship listed (tilted) alot. A woman who was near the rail fell, but she was found alive. This was a freak thing that is not likely to happen again.

As far as a cruiseship being the "perfect crime scene", I don't think so! Yes, crime happens on cruises, just like it does everywhere else in the world. However, there are camera's all over the cruise ship. A few months ago when a man fell overboard and died, the found the video which showed him going over the rail from several different angles. He was severely drunk and climbed up over a rail. You are more likely to get caught performing a crime on a cruise ship than anywhere else (except maybe Vegas!).

So, to keep it simple - just don't get drunk on a cruise ship. (Besides, I like to remember my cruises - don't you?)

snow
more and bigger ships cruising. more people on ships. more cabins have balconies are leading to more people going overboard.

I was on the cruise right before the latest jumping. I took a 5-day cruise on the Carnival Ecstasy from 6/25 to 6/30. Had a great time. Great crew. Lovely ship. This kid, David Ritcheson, jumped from the Ecstasy to his death on July 1, 2007. I feel bad for everyone involved, especially the crew members who I came to love so much, and his fellow passengers who were just trying to get away from it all and have a good time.

Instead of Jumping overboard how about Being Pushed Overboard.
That is the perfect CRIME.
Want to get rid of your spouse. Take her on a cruise and get her drunk and push her in. And then you got RAPES. The attacker rapes the girl and then tosses her overboard. She can't talk now can she.
A cruise ship is the perfect crime scene. And the cruise ships just sweep all this stuff under the carpet. They do not want to hurt the industry otherwise they lose business and money. They are investigated quietly.
People go missing all the time. No answers, no bodies and no one take responsibility.
This has been going on since cruising began. It is just the media who decided it was frequent enough to make it personal.

The cruise ships want you money. That is more important than the lives that are lost at sea.
