MY husband and I are going on a first cruise to the Baltics. What money do we need when we go ashore .?

Do we take a quantity of Euro's and other currencies or do they all take Euros. Can we change money on board ship?

You can change your money on board the ship, but the exchange rates ate pretty dire.
Obviously Euros are fine for all those countries in the EU.
US dollars work well in most of the countries but some of the countries on the Baltic cruise itinerary will only take their own money.

Denmark - Danish Krone
Sweden - Swedish Krona
Russia - Roubles, although they will gratefully take dollars.

You can take Euro's if you want. I worked on a ship, that sailed in the Baltics and when I got off, I usually used my credit card for most things. It was just more convenient. Also, depending on the ship, there might be a place onboard to exchange foreign currency. I think the exchange rates are the same rates that Citibank uses or something like that.

They don't all take Euros. Depends on the country.

When are you going?
We're doing the Baltic cruise in August - Royal Caribbean.
We are taking Euros, using credit card for any on-board purchases, and will get extra cash, if we must, on board although the rates aren't favourable.
You will need some small change for the Russian loos!
If you are going on an earlier date - warn them we're coming!

Euros. Dollars are preferred in Russia.

check to see what the exchange rate is on board the ship and in your home town before you sail, and the purser on board will tell you what dosh you need for any country/

They will prefer to take Euros rather then their own currency as it is worth more when exchanged. You can change money on board, but watch out in case it is a rip off rate.l would change money at my local bank to get good rate

Sali
Of course the Euro is acceptable anywhere, and the U$ as well,

But how much you need depends on how much you want to spend, anything sold in the cruise is quite expensive as you have no other choice, I have seen people buying their mineral water and drinks outside the ship or you can take it with you if you have a car, it will be cheaper to buy it outside the ship.

Consider using a credit card instead. That way the exchange rate is done for you and it gives you a nice receipt for the stuff you buy. But if you really want to use cash, what I found is US dollars as well as Euros are accepted just about everywhere. They do have a money exchanger on the ship, just in case.

All the other asnwers are vewy good but be careful using a credit card for two reasons:

1) identity theft
2) exchange rate

Talk to your credit card company about the exchange rate issue.

Also, ALERT them to the idea that you will be traveling so they won't freeze your spending for suspicion of fraud. My credit card company has nearly left me hanging high and dry on a few occasions until I could get to a phone to let them know the expense was ME, not fraud.

Gotta love them! :-D

Have fun.
